GARMENT.
' Specification of Letters 1atent. Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
Application filed November 11, 1916. Serial No. 130,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHEL V. HIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to childrens wear, and the main object thereof is to provide an underwaist designed along scientific lines whereby the weight and strain of garments supported thereby, and strains due to physi cal action on the part of the wearer, will be taken by bands leading over the shoulders of the wearer, and not upon the fabric of the underwaist.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the underwaist to the particular wearer, either boy or girl, and to adapt the underwaist to the particular garments worn therewith, such as drawers, pants, underskirts and overskirts, as well as stockings.
A further object is to form the body of the underwaist of one piece of suitable material the shape of which is produced by folds concealed beneath reinforcing strips, contributing to the support of the suspended garments.
And further objects are to provide such underwaists which are very simple in construction, very comfortable for the wearer, and comparatively inexpensive, and which give entire freedom to any physical movements on the part of the wearer.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a front view of my underwaist as worn;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a similar section taken on the line 4% of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the underwaist;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 7 is a similar section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 8 is a similar section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 9 represents thebody of the underwaist, shown as of mesh, open at its front with the resulting edges 10 and 11 doubled or reinforced, Fig. 8, and held in closed position by means of suitable fasteners, snap fasteners 12 being illustrated although others may be used.
The body 9 is preferably made of one piece of material and given shape by folding, as at the sides, at 13, Fig. 7, said folds being covered by reinforcing strips 14. reaching from the arm-holes to the lower edge of the garment, Fig. 4, with the latter reinforced as at 15.
Passed over the shoulders are two straps 16 connected at the rear by braces 17 and preferably interrupted and joined by shaping strips 18 to overcome the buckling of the straps in the curving thereof, and I provide a reinforcing piece 19 between the braces 17 and strips 18 and extend a reinforcing strip 20 downwardly from the middle of the lower brace 17.
The front ends of the straps 16 are looped at 21 and 22 and the rear ends at 23 and 24.- to provide engaging means for hose supporters 25 having suitable clamps 26 at their ends and suitable buckles 27 for the adjustment of the lengths thereof, said loops being tacked beneath belt members 28 and 29, and I join the rear ends of the straps 16 to the reinforcing 30 of the arm-holes by means of strips 31.
Also tacked beneath said belt members, in the positions of the front flap 10, the side strips 14, and the rear strip 20, are looped tapes for holding three vertically spaced buttons 32, 33 and 34 in each position, the lowermost buttons 32 being for connection with the underdrawers, the intermediate buttons 33 being for connection with the pants of a boy or with the undershirt of a girl, and the uppermost buttons 31 being for connection with the outerskirt of a girl Having frilly described my" inyention', ing the; rear portions of;said= straps, strips What I'claim as new, and desire to secure joining the rear ends of said straps at a m) by Letters Patent, is: point below the braces With the rear edges An underwaisty, comprisingia bod-ymerm ofsaid armrholes, a pair; of belt members 5 her having arm-holes, straps passed from below said braces and garment supporting the front thereof to the rear above said armbuttons carried by said belt members.
holes and having their ends formed into hosesuppontingdops; a pair of braces-join- ETHEL VALLANCE HIGLEY;
Oopies of this patent may'be'obtai'ned' for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
