TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, JOHN F. KoHLEn and S. B. Couovnn, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Pie-Plates; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,` and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a pie-plate constructed according to my invention.

Figure 2 is a plan view' of a portion of the same.

Figure 3 is a plan view of another portion of the same.

Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

In the pie trade, as ordinarily carried on, it is customary to lenve the plates-upon which the pies are placed with the grocer or retail dealer to be returned after the pies are disposed of; and it is found that a considerable portion of the plates thus left are never returned, thus involving a material loss 'to the baker or manufacturer. The object of this invention is to prevent this loss, as far as may be, by so constructing' the plate that only a portion thereof sha-ll be left with the pies, the said portion being formed in such manner as to be incapable ofuse as an ordinary plate, so .that being useless to the retail dealer or purchaser of the pies, no' temptation to retain it will exist.

The invention may be said to consist in a plate made in two parts, which together may be used as a common plate or baking-tin, but which may be separated when desired, so that only a comparatively worthless portion thereof maybe left with the grocer or dealer to support the pie.

To enable others to understand the nature and construction of our invention, we will proceed to describe vit with reference to the drawings; l

The main or outer portion of the plate is shown at A, and consists of a sheet-metal disk, made concave, or withl its circumferential part turned up at an angle to its bottom or central part, as shown'more plainly at iig. Vl, the shape of such main portion A resembling or corresponding .to that of an ordinary circular pie-plate.

i This main portion may furthermore be furnished with a central hole or opening, a. The other portion of the plate is marked Bin the drawings, and consists of a disk, the edges of which are slightly .turned upward, and which is ofsuch size as yto tit within the portion A, as represented in'g. l. This portion B is formed with any desired number of large openings, b, the object of vwhich is to prevent such portion, B, from being used after the manner of au ordinary plate when separated or detached from the other portionA, as hereinafter fully set forth. 'lhccentral part c ofthe portion B should be of such size' and shape that when the two portions of the plate are put together, as just hereinbefore set forth, .it will cover the central hole or opening a in the portion Y A. The two portions A B being thus placed together, the plate formed thereby may be lused in the same manner as an ordinary plate or baking-tin, but when the pie is delivered to the purchaser it is detached, together with the portion B, from the main portion A, by passing the finger through the opening a and pressing the portion B upward, the latter serving to support the pie and remaining therewith, while the other portion A is retained by the person selling or delivering the pies; and inasmuch as the portion B is, by itself, comparatively worthless, it follows' that the aforesaid purchaser can have no object in refraining from properly returning it Vto the owner, who is thus protected from the loss which occurs from the cause lie'reinbefore mentioned when the common pie-plates are employed.

Instead of being made in the precise manner hereinbefore set forth, the main portion of the plate may b of annular shape, with the other portion B made with its central part to cover the opening therein, and with radial or other properly-shaped arms to enable such portion B to support the pie when detached from the portion A, as hereinbefore fully set forth.

What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The plate constructed in two portions in such manner that one portion may be detached to separately support the pie or like article, substantially as herein set forth. v
