TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. RICE, ofA Boston, in the county of Suolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Portable Shelf; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marltec thereon, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective illustration, in which a is a block representing a section of a cook-stove on the right, with my improved shelf attached, and on the left a section of a ledge, Zi, attached to any article of furniture or fixture with another modified specimen of my improvement attached.
Figure 2 is a side view of myimprovement applied to a ledge or strip attached to a wall or other fixture v or article.
Figure 3 shows a specimen adapted fer attachment or application to any ordinary strip or ledge which may cliance"to occur Without bevelledor other particularly retaining edges.
Figure 4 is a side view, and
Figure 5 a front view of another specimen.
Like letters refer to the same or corresponding parts in all the figures.
c is the shelf or pan. To this is fixed an attachment, z',.having the suitable-shaped end d to bear under a projecting part, as e. Another part,f, has an end, g, suited to bear upon the top of some object or article, and a lower part, k, adapted to bear against the side of such an object or article, or be adjusted with reference thereto by means of a screw, L. The part e' is pivoted to the partvf permanently by means of a journal or pin, Z, or by means cflugs m on part v Notches or sockets u and the lugs may, however, be reversed in order, the rst being formed in part z', and the latter on part f, and of cach there may be one, two, or more arranged for purposes of adjustment.
The use and operation of my improvement may be easily comprehended from the drawing. It is only necessary to lift the shelf or pan so as to cause part cl to swing clear of part e to release the whole device from the object or article tc which it is applied. So, also, to apply it to an object or article it is taken in the hand by the shelf' or pan, part y adjusted to the top, and 7c te the side, passing part d under part e, and dropping down the pau or shelf, when it is secure and ready for use as a receptacle or support for such articles as it may be required for, whethenas a ladys work-table, or the cook's cook-stove companion, or other of the multiplicity of uses to which it is adapted. A multitude of various designs, forms, and styles of nish will readily suggest themselves to the artisan as feasible and. appropriate in the extended application of my improvement.
Having described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
I claim pivoted orjointed parts t' cl and q c, in combination with a portable shelf` or receptacle e, as a new rirticle of manufacture.
BENJAA'IIN F. RICE.
