Application filed February 26, 1912. Serial No. 680,114
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH N. FRYBERU, ELMER E. FRYBERG, and PAUL JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Casters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to improvements in barrel casters.
The object of our invention is to provide a caster adapt-ed to be readily applied to a barrel, whereby the barrel may be readily moved about from place to place, and when three or more casters are used they provide a stand or support for the barrel.
Another object of our invention is to provide a simple, cheap and more effective caster having certain details of structure hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of our improved caster. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line AB, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a barrel showing three of our improved casters applied thereto and forming a support for the barrel.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a segmental-shaped piece of metal preferably cast and having formed in the outermost edge thereof a groove 2, which is shown as circular in form to correspond with that of the curve of the barrel and into which the chime of a common barrel is designed to fit when the caster is slipped under the end of the barrel into place.
In the center of the segmental body portion 1 and facing downwardly or in the opposite direction to that in which the chime groove faces, is formed the caster boss 3, having an opening 3 therein in which snugly fits the shank 4, of the caster 5, and said shank is held in the opening by means of the set screw 6, whereby the caster may be readily removed as desired. The caster, as
shown, is preferably of the spherical ballkind, although it is evident that any other form of caster, such as a roller caster, may be used without departing from our invention.
The upper face of the body portion 1, on
the inside of the chime groove 2, is provided with a series of upwardly extending prongs or points 7 which, as shown, are formed integral with the body portion and are adapted to engage the bottom of the barrel and hold the caster in its place or osition on the barrel, so that it cannot sli e on the barrel or the barrel slide thereon.
Thus it is seen, we have provided a simple traction caster for barrels, which can be readily slipped under a barrel by. a single person, as all that is necessary is to tilt the barrel slightly and slip the caster under the barrel.
It will be seen that in some cases a single caster will be sufiicient to enable the barrel to be readily moved about, but in other cases three casters may be used and in such an event, make a convenient stand or support whereby the barrel is supported off of the ground.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a segmental-shaped base, a caster within the under central face of the base and said base having a groove within the upper peripheral face thereof.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a segmental plate having a curved groove in its upper face and parallel with the periphery thereof, a boss formed on the under side of the plate on the inside of the groove and having an opening therein, a caster removably secured in said opening and prongs carried by the upper face of the plate on the inside of the groove and caster.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a segmental plate having a curved groove in its upper face parallel with the periphery thereof, prongs carried by the plate on the inside by the groove, a boss formed on the under side of the plate on the inside of the groove, and having an opening therein, a ball caster having a shank in the opening in the boss and means for locking the shank in the opening.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a segmental plate having a segmental groove in its upper face parallel with the periphery thereof, prongs carried by the plate on the inside of the groove, a boss formed on the under sideof the plate on the our signatures in the presence of two Witinside of. the groove and having a recess nesses.
therein, a ball caster having a reduced shank JOSEPH N. FRYBERG.
entering said recess, and a set screw passing ELMER E. FRYBERG. J transversely through the boss and engaging PAUL JOHNSON.
