S. B. SMITH AN D EDWARD LINDSLEY, OF GLEVELAN D, OHIO.-
Letters Patent No. 64,161, dated April 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PANTALOONS GUARDS.
TO ALL WHOM IT-MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, S. B. SMITH and EDWARD LINDSLEY, of Cleveland, in the county o fCuya-hoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pantaloons Guards; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an inside view of the guard.
Figure 2 is an outside iew of the same.
Figure 3 is a top view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detached VlBWflf the button.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
This guard consists of a narrow thin metallic plate A, fig. 1, or it may be constructed of rubber, or any other material of a suitable nature. The shape of this guard is such as to conform to the size and circle of the leg of the pantaloon to which it is attached, either to the instep 0r heels, or, if so desired, it may be attached to both. lhe lower edge of this guard is provided with a narrow rounded flange, B, fig. 3, which is about equal in width to the thickness of the pant'aloon, and under the edge of which it projects, as hereafter described, C, fig. 1; an enlarged View of the same is shown. In fig. 4 is a button. This button consists of a disk of the same material as the guard, and is provided with a tongue or hook, D, which will be seen to fold baclc upon the face; of the button. On the under side of this tongue is a nib, E, the position of which is such as to form a hook on the inner side, and an inclined shoulder on the outer. The manner of attaching this guard to the pantaloon is as follows: The buttons are sewed on the inside of the pant, with the hook outward, and in the direction as indicated in figfl; the guard is provided with the lateral slots F, in which the hook of the button is inserted, and is then drawn laterally'until the nib referred to slips into a small hole made in the guard, and is thereby prevented from drawing out by the nib catching on the side of the hole; by this means the guard-is securely and neatly attachedto the pantaloons, and at thesame time may be easily detached by springing the nib from the hole and withdrawing the hook from the slot. By this arrangement of securing the guard it will be evident that it is adjustable to any thickness of cloth with equal facility and security. The position of the guard when in place is shown in fig. 1, in which A is the insideof the guard, and G a section of the pantaloon to which it is attached, as above described. By the flange referred to being made to cover the edge of the cloth, it is thereby protected from abrasion, and hence will not wear out, as is common to pants not thus protected, It also serves to keep the pantaloon in'good shape, giving thereby a neat'er'fit andneatness to the foot. This flange may be made to turn up around on the outside, or omitted'entirely, if so desired, without in the least afiecting the protection of the pautaloon. Should 'the guard be used without the flange, it is allowed to descend a little below the edge of the pantaloon, thereby offering the same protection as though it turned under, as above described. p
What we claim as our improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic guard A, constructedsubstantially as described, in combination with the hooked buttons O,.in
the manner and for the purpose set forth.
S. B. SMITH,
EDWARD LINDSLEY.
