TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

v Be it known that I, EDWARD LINDSLEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloons-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making' a part of this specitication,in which- Figure l is a detached view of the guard.

The others figures, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, will be referred to in the description.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the-views. v

The guard, as shown in g. 1, consists of 'a metallic plate, A, the lower edge of which is curved outwardly,

forming a. flange, so ns to reach under and thereby protect the hem of the pantaloons, or the guard may be used without the flange, in which case it is allowed to descend a little below the edge of the pantaloons, thereby oering the same protection as though it turned under, as above described. A guard attached to the pantaloons, is shown in iig. 2, the attachment being made in the following manner:

B B are loops, struck upon the sides of the plate, and in which pins C are introduced. The guard being placed on the inside of the .pantaloons, with the hem resting on the ange referred to, the pins C are then inserted in the loops, and the cloth thereby pinned in, as shown in fig. 3, said figure being a vertical section showing the guard as attached to the pantaloons C. Fig. 2 shows the position of the pins in the cloth, said pins being indicated by the dotted'liues C, and the/heavy line below represents the edge of the plate or guard A. y

In order to keep the pantaloons `clean in wet or muddy weather, they can ,be raised up and held in place by the following device, viz: Fig. 6 is a button or stud furnished with a coiled wire, D, which is inserted in the boot above the heel, as shown in iig. 4, in which E is the stud, and is secured in place by ceiling the wire v into a loop or scroll, as shown in the drawing, and which ed'eetually prevents the button from being pulled out.

v The pantaloons being drawn up above the heel, the stud is inserted in the hole F, figs. 1 and 4, cut in the guard for that purpose. A slot, a, lig. 1, cut in the upper edge of the hole, fits on the neck of the stud, and thereby prevents the guard from becoming detached from the stud until released by the hand.` In this manner the pantaloons are easily and conveniently suspended above the heel of the boot, away from the wet and dirt, as eifectually as though rolled up in the ordinary way. Fig. 4shows the pantaloons as thus raised up and buttoned on the stud, and which, it will be seen, is far removed from the ground and dirt. Fig. 5 is a modification of the guard, which, it will be observed, consists of three or more sections Gr. A. guard -thus constructed allows the pantaloons to be rolled up in the ordinary way, and which is alike applicable to the instep as to the heel; so, also, is the guard, represented in fig. 1. This guard may be constructed of other suitable material than metal, as rubber, horn, or by a combination of both. I

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. `The guard-plate A, loops B B, and pins C, when combined and arranged in relation to the pantaloons, substantially as and for the`purpose described.

2. The button D and guard A, arranged as described, in relation to the boot and pantaloons, substantiallyl as and for the purpose set forth.
