Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICEO RUFUS S. PICKE'IT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,33l, dated March 20, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUEUs S. PICKET'I, of the city and county ofNew Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Button-Catches; and I (lo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character', and operation ot' the same, ref'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective View of a button-hole made of elastic wire and a coinmon button suitable to be buttoned intoll'it.
My improvement consists in making; the button-hole of elastic wire, as shown at B, so that each of the metallic forms will receive any ordinary button, as C, or any other kind, thus furnishing` a button-hole which will never Wear out.
I make the Wire button-hole B of a single piece ot' elastic wire, substantially of the4 form and proportions shown at B, so that when the button passes into it its elasticity will clasp its eye or shank so as to prevent accidental unbuttoning, and I sew it to the cloth by passing the thread over the Wire and through the cloth, as indicated at d and e, so that the button will pass in under the the parts fand g.
I use any common button, as shown at C, or of any other kind or quality, it' it is only ot' the proper size and thickness to pass into and under the metallic wire, so that the metallic button-hole may be used with such buttons as happen to be on the coat at the time; and the metallic button-hole may be attached directly upon the common button-hole at any time, as the parts which are sewed on will lap considerabl y above and below the ordinary hole Worked in the cloth.
XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic button-catch, When constructed and fitted for use substantially as herein described and set forth.
It. S. PICKETT.
