FASTENER FOB.A BUTTONS, STUDS, dto.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. SEDGWIGK, of Onargo, in the county of Iriquois, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Fastener for Shirt-Studs, Sleeve-Buttons, Brooches, and other similar articles of jewelry, to wearing-apparel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my improvement appcrtains to fully understand and constructthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which 'make part of this specification, and in whichi I Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved fastener, as attached to cuiis.
Figures 3 and 4 are similar views ofthe same, asattached to vests or any kind of buttoning wearing-apparel in which detachable buttons or studs may or can be used.
Figure 5 is a partly-sectional view of the same.
Like letters of reference indicatelike parts `in the several gures.
The nature of my invention consists in applyingan elastic loop fastened to the wearing-apparel at a point convenient to thestud, button, brooch, or other' and similar article of jewelry, vin any convenient manner, so that the said loop may be passed over the stud to seize its shank, thus fastening` the same to the wearing-apparel.
My improvedfastener can be applied to any article of wearing-apparel which is fastened by buttons, and is intended to securely Vhold the stud, button, brooch, or other article of-jewelry, which may be employed to fasten the garment, cui?, &e. I
A, in rigs 1 and 2, may represent cnls, which are fastened by studs B. By the side of the button-holes a,'or a little below them, I make a small stitched or otherwise-formed hole, Z, through which is passed a small elastic loop or strap, C, the ends of which `are made into a knot, which prevents its slipping entirely through the hole b. i i
The loop C isthen passed over the stud, button, brooch, Sie., which latter pas-ses through the bntton-hole a, when thc other part of the cu' can be buttoned either over the head or the plate of the stud.
In figs. '3 and 4, part of the front of a vest is represented, to which my improved fastener is attached. In g. 3 the middle stud is represented as held by the loop C, so that it cannot be lost, even when detached from both button-holes.
I make the loop detachable from all garments which are to bc washed, by merely passing it through the holes I), but in articles of cloth, such as vests, coats, &c., in which it is desired to wear studs, or similar jewelry or valuable buttons, Isew the loop fast to the under side or inner side of the garment, near the buttonholes,as shown in iig. 4, at D. l
.I may, when making the loop Odetachable, cover the knot with gold, silver, ur any other suitable metal, to giveit a neat-appearance, or the free ends of the loop, instead of being knotted; may be held by a metal head, without beingr first knotted. Y
Having thus described my iuvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An auxiliary attachment for securing buttons and studs, consisting ot' an elastic loop passing through or united to the fabric near to the button-hole or cyelet, all substantially as described.
