Description
DAVID RAI'l, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON, STUD, au.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 8,860,ldated April 6, 12,352
To aI/.Z whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID RAIT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Studs and Buttons which is Applicable to Various Articles of Jewelry; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a fold stud or button in perspective. Fig. 2 is a section'of the same lengthwise through the shank, and Fig. 3 is a section taken transversely `through the shank. f
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several iigures.
This invention is applicable to studs, covllar-buttons, glove buttons, sleeve buttons, vest buttons, cuff fasteners, and other articles of a similar nature.
It consists in making either of these articles with the two disks or heads A, A', de-
tached from each other, and attaching to A, of thesaid heads a tube a, which forms the shank; and to the other A, a small stem which enters the tube a, attached to A, and has two snap-springs c, attached to its point, and having a tendency to spring outward, terminating inpnger pieces CZ, closerunder the head. lVhen the stem is placed in the tube, the springs yield until a notch e, under each linger piece reaches the end of the tube, which is turned slightly inward. The springs then tty outward from the stem, and their notches catch the turned in edge of the tube, and thus both the heads are secured together and cannot be pulled apart until pressure is applied to the finger pieces to release the notches. The action of the catch i WG111".
springs will` be best understood byreference to Fig. 2. i nrstuds and `buttons'made in this way, either or both heads may be o-rnamented in any way suitable to the taste.. and either worn outward. The. nger pieces may be made to lit so snugunder the head A, as not Vto be observed when` the article is in It may be seen in the drawing that notches are made in them` which will receive the thumb and iingernails and facilitate their being pressed togetherto release `the snap springs.
The only holes required to be made in a garment intended to be secured by these studsand buttons are eyelet holes sufficiently large to admit the tube or shank a. The
manner of inserting the stud or button is to put the-shank through from one side, and then insert the stem on the opposite side.`
This improvement constitutes a secure'and speedy` method of attaching and changing one piece of jewelry to make it serve various purposes, for instance a ring, pin, brooch, stud, or button, the part containing the stone` having the stem and snap springs attached, and the ring, or the back of the pin, brooch, stud, or button having a tube a, into which the stem fits.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` Making a stud, button or other similar fastening or article of jewelry, in two parts, one part carrying a tube a, and the other part with two snap springs c, c, operating in the manner substantially as set forth.
DAVID RAIT.,
