WILLIAM J. TERRY, or WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
I .Lcttc'rs'late'nt No: 65,776, dated June 11, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PASTE-NINGS FOR NECK-TIES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, WUIJYAM J. TERRY, oi`Walla Walla; county of .Walla Walla, Washington Territory, have invented a newv andV useful Improvement in Fasteners for Neck-Ties, 8nd.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draining', making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view in section of so much of my improvement as is necessary to show themanner of attaching the head to the shank, Src.
Figure 2 is a. side elevation of my improved fastener. A
Figure 3 is a similar View with the head removed.
Figures 4, 5, 6, T, 8, 9, and 10 show modifications in the 'construction of the fastener, hereinafter explained; and
Figure 11 represents n cravat or tie provided with an eyelet or perforation through the tie for adapting it to use with my improved fastener. I
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the employment of the various kinds ofneCk-tiesin use', and with which I am acquainted, great difficulty andconsequent vexaticn have resulted from their liability to getout of order, from the breaking of the elastic or other fastening. by. which they were secured, the rumpling or creasing of the. tic, ttc.; and the object of myv invention is to provide a nsatand simple fastening, one that is durable and not liable to get out ot' order,'and which at the same time is susceptible of being made of any desired pattern, configuration, or degree of ornamentation to suit the taste of the wea-rer, or adapt it to the kind or style of omvat or other article of dress which it is used to fasten.
My invention consists in the' construction of the fastener or stud with a removable head', which, when in use, is connected to the shank by a spring or screw, and which may be readily removed and replaced for the purpose of attaching or detaching the tie or other article'ot` dress secured thereby. It further consists in Vforming a slot in the fastener, whereby it is adapted, in connection with the removable head, to receive ornaments, such as lockets, arrows, drops. ,850., as hereinafter explained; and it further` consists in the manner of -adapting; the tie or other article of apparel to be used in connection with the fastener, by the application thereto of :5o eyelet hole,`either worked therein'or metallic, as hereinafter set forth.' v
' To enable others to understand and use my invention, I will` describe the saine with reference to the drawings, in whichl a represents the shank, and b a disk or flange, formed on 'oneend thereof. or applied thereto in any usual manner. b is a second flange, formed upon or secured tothe shank at a suitable distance from flange b to form, if desired, a stu'l fastening for the neck hand. The sha-aku. is made' to extend beyond the diskor flange b', where such flange is used, to receive the cravat or tie, which is provided with an eyelet hole or perforation to adapt it to receive the shank. Said shank has a groove formed in its extended end to receive the spring-catch e ih the detachable head c, (see figs'. 1, 2, 3,) or instead of the groove and spring-catch, a screwlthread may be cut on Vthe cud of the shank, and the head may be made to screw thereon in the manner shown by the drawings, figs. l, 5, 6, and 10,. serving thereby to properly compress and secure the tie or other article fastened againstthe disk-or Aflange b. Where the screw is used, the shank may be slotted to receive an arrow or other ornamental device, as'showny in the drawings, figs. 4,' 5, and 6, between the head and the tic `secm'edupon the shank thereby. In figs. 7 and 8 the shank is shown perforatedto receive a locket or other form of ornament, and in liga. Stand 10 the head is applied byscrewmg it upon the shank, as before explained, andihas attached to it a small ball or knob, which nia-y, if desired, be provided with a shank, and made to screw into the head in 'such manner as to form a means of attaching a drop, pin, or other desired device, as shown by the drawing. The tiev or other article oi' dress to 4be secured is provided with a perforation or eyelet, f, applied in any usual manner to adapt it. to receive :ind he secured upon the shank, as explained. i
The operation will be readily understood: Where the fastener is used for securing the cravat, and is providcd with both flanges b 1i', it may he inserted through perforations made in the neck-band of the shirt, the suine as tln` rdinary stud-fastening. '.lhe perforated ends ot' the collar and the cravat are then slippedover the ex tended end of the shank, when the head is secured thereon in the manner explainedl and forms an effectual fastening for the collar and tie. Tirol-lange b may be dispensed with if preferred, when the shank is simply passed throu'gh the several articles from the inside, Awhich, are then compressed against `flange b and held by th'e lhead c. The head c and flanges or disks may, if desired, be provided with small sharp points, which penetrate the tie or other articles of dress secured, and thereby'prevent tlie fastener from turning. f The fastener may be made of any suitable material, such as iron, steel, brass, or the more valuable metals;- and pearl, ivory, v ulcanized rubber, or even woodinay be used if tion may be given to tl1e=head or clasp e, to adapt it to the particular taste or fancy ofthe wearer.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stud or fastener, provided with the removablehead, constructed and applied substantially as and foigthe purpose set forth.
2. The slotted shank, in combination with the removable head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The head c and flanges or disks b b', provided with points for the purpose of preventing the turning of the fastener, as described.
4. The neck-tie, provided with the eyelet-hole f, whereby it is adapted to be used in connection with the fastener, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of Ma-1867.
' WILLIAM. J. TERRY.
