(Specimens WVM/Lance@ UNITED STATES A PATENT OFFICE.
IIATTIE C. BOI-INE, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE BOIINE KNITTING IVORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
KNIT GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,945, dated February 3, 1891.
Application iiled June 23, 1890. Serial No. 356,32'3. (Specimens.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HATTIE O. BOHNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county ot` Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knit Garments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knit garments, and has especial reference to that class of such garments known as ladies7 vests and union suits.
lleretofore in the construction of these garments it has been the custom to cut the body of the garment and to sew the pockets for the bust in the openings thus formed. This manner of making the garment is expensive, and the garment thus constructed is uncomfortable to the wearer; and it is the object of my invention to produce a garment that can be manufactured at a reduced cost and that will be entirely comfortable to the wearer.
The invention consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawing I have shown a front elevation of a garment embodying my invention.
The upper portion of the bodyA is formed with a two-and-two rib, (indicated at 13,) and the entire body is knit in one continuous body. At the proper points for the pockets C for the bust the stitch is changedby substituting a plain at web fora square of needles, thusmaking the garment larger atthose places and consequently forming the pockets integral with the garment. It will thus be seen that I have provided a garment in which the pockets will be formed integral with the body and all seams thus avoided, so that the iinished garment will fit the wearer naturally and comfortably, and also form a stronger and easier support for the bust than the garments now in use.
The cost of manufacturing the garment is reduced by my invention, as I dispense with the use of a separate piece of material to form the pockets and save the time now required to fit the pockets in place and secure them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a knit garment formed in a single continuous body and having the pockets for the bust formed integral with the body and ot' a different stitch than the body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I-IATTIE C. BOI-INE.
