ROBERT M. APPLETON, OF LAKE VILLAGE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
UNDER SHIRT OR VEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,569, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed December 1, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. APPLETON, of Lake Village,in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undershirts, of which the following is a specifica` tion.
The under'shirts or vests for gentlemens, ladies, and childrens use, as now manufactured, are woven on circular looms, and are v shaped by cutting from the fabric so knitted pieces of the proper size and sewing them together, or they are shaped on boards, so as to fit properly to the body. The objections to these methods of manufacturing undershirts have been that in one case there was considerable loss in material, while in the other case the goods lost their shape after the iirst washing and itted badly and uncomfortably to the body.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved under shirt or vest which will retain its original woven shape after washin g and iit the form of the body in an easy and comfortable manner.
The invention consists of an undershirt in which plain knitting and tuck-knittin g are combined in such a manner that especially the upper and lower parts are tuck-knitted, so as to become wider or more expanded, while the middle part is made of plain knitting, so as to fit closer than the other parts.
The accompanying drawing represents a front View of an under shirt or vest for gentlemens, ladies, or childrens use.
A represents my improved undershirt, in which the middle or waist part, a, is made of plain stitch or knittingfor narrowing the same, and either the upper part, b, or the lower part,
d, or both parts, made in tuck stitch or knitas the same iit thereby better over the breast and hips and closely at the middle part or waist.
AInstead of making the middle part plain, the same may be made with widely-separated tuck-stitches, as shown in the drawing, by which a slight degree of elasticity is imparted to the waist part, which is of special advantage for ladies and childrens undershirt-s.
rIhe tuck-knitting can be produced in any desired pattern, closer together or at some distance apart, as taste and fancy may direct. The goods are manufactured on lthe wellknown circular-knitting machines or shirtlooms with a continuous thread or yarn, and may be woven eitherl circular and seamless or sewed at the sides, as desired.
I am aware that undershirts in which the whole shirt is made either in plain stitch or in tuck stitch or knitting are well known, and I4 therefore do not claim them. Neither of these undershirts, however, allows an easy and comfortable t at the upper and lower parts of the body and a closer t at the middle part or waist, which forms the essential feature of my invention, and which is obtained by making the middle part of plain stitch or knitting and the upper or lower part, or both, of tuck stitch or knitting.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an under shirt or vest, the combinationV of the middle part, made in plain stitch or knitting, and the upper part, made in tuck stitch or knitting, substantially as described.
2. In an under shirt or vest, the combination of the middle part, made in plain stitch or knitting, and the lower part, made in tuck stitch or knitting, substantially as described.
3. In an under shirt or vest, the 'combination of the middle part, made in plain stitch or knitting, and the upper` and lower parts, made in tuck stitch or knitting, substantially as described.
4. An under shirt or vest the middle part of which is made in plain stitch or knitting,
and provided with Widely-separated lines of In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1o tuck stitch or knitting, substantially as demy invention I have signed my naine7 in presscribed. ence of two Witnesses, this 19th day of No- 5. As an article of manufacture, an under. Vember, 1880. shirt or vest whereof the middle part is made I ROBERT M APPLETON in plain stitch or knitting, with widely-separated lines of tuck stitch or knitting, and the Witnesses:
upper and lower parts in tuck stitch or knit- J. A. CLINE, ting, substantially as described. RUFUS S. LEWIS.
