SWEATER.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HYMAN STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sweaters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in sweaters ofthat class having tubular collars; and it relates particularly to a sweater knitted with a square neck-opening, so as to improve the fit of the garment around the neck-of the wearer. Sweaters were heretofore made with a straight opening or slit in the neck portion for the attachment of the collar, the slit forming the best edges to which the collar could be readily attached by knitting or otherwise by reason of the meshes along the opening being preserved intact. Obviously a sweater with an opening of this nature cannot produce a satisfactory fit at the neck of the wearer, for the reason that the opening does not conform to the shape of the neck without producing straining or stretching of the fabric at the shoulder portions near the slit or straight opening, thereby rendering the garment uncomfortable to the wearer and, further, producing a fullness at the bosom, which detracts from the appearance of the sweater.

The object of my invention is to obviate these objectional features by furnishing a sweater the body of which is knitted with a square opening, thus displacing sufficient material to provide for the shape of the neck. I am aware that garments have been made with neck-openings cut into the goods; but knit garments, such as sweaters and jerseys, having collars have not been made with such openings, as it necessitated the cutting of the meshes or loops, so that a strong and substantial edge could not be obtained without binding the same or otherwise using reinforcing materials for joining the collarto the body of the sweater, thereby making a seam more or less bulky and objectionable.

The invention, therefore, consists of a sweater comprising a body portion knitted with a square opening for the neck, said body portion being selvaged along the edges of the sides of the opening, and a tubular collar attached at its lower edge to the body portion at the opening, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my sweater. Fig. 2'is a similar view showing a collar in detached position, and Fig. 3 is a top View of the body portion of the sweater.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, (t represents the body portion of my improved sweater, preferably of the seamless class, made of worsted or other similar material and having the upper portion thereof provided with a square opening a for the neck. The body portion is knitted with a square opening, so as to obviate the necessity of removing or cutting away sufficient of the fabric to insure a good fit of the sweater around the neck of the wearer or, as in the case of sweaters heretofore made, to prevent the straining or stretching of the shoulder portions and also the fullness or crowding up of the sweater at the bosom. In order to obtain a satisfactory connection between the collar 0, which is tubular or cylindrical in shape, and the body portion a, the side edges a of the opening a are selvaged, while the front and back edges are formed with the usual loops or meshes of the fabric. The lower edge of the collar easily adapts itself to the shape of the opening, whereas the front and back edges are unfinished, and its attachment to the body of the sweater is effected in any well-known manner, as by knitting or stitching. By forming the selvaged edges a the cutting through of the meshes of the fabric and the consequent danger of unraveling of the threads is avoided and a strong seam can thereby be produced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A sweater, consisting of a body provided with a square neck-opening having selvaged side edges and unfinished back and front edges, and a collar attached around its bottom to the edges of said opening, substan-' tially as set forth.
