STOCKING AND THE METHODOF MAKING THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,734, dated December 5, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Stockings and in the Mode of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification. I
The object of my invention is to so make a stocking that it will have the elasticity due to in Fig. 1. 45
a ribbed fabric, but will have plain fabric in the heel and sole of the foot, and will be without side seams in the foot and leg. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of the foot and part of the leg of a stocking made in accordance with my invention; and Figs. 2, 3, and at, views showing the method of making the stocking.
1n carrying out my invention I first make a knitted tube, one portion, 50, of which is of ribbed fabric and the other portion, y, of plain fabric, such a tube and the machine for making the same forming the subject of a separate application forpatent. In the plain rear portion of the tube I then make an incision, a, Fig. 2, and open the same so as to form a recess, b, at the point where the heel of the stocking is to be formed. (See Fig. 3.)
The heel is composed of a separate piece of fabric, which is in the form of a pocket, d, Fig.
4, and is united to the edges 0 andf of the recess, and the toe of the stocking is formed on the end of the tube in the usual manner.
The pocket (Z is preferably formed by running the stitches around the edge e of the recess b onto the needles of an ordinary heelingmaohine and knitting onto said edge a piece of fabric of the proper shape and dimensions for the desired heel, the lower edges of this piece being then united byali ne of stitches, V
g, to form the pocket, the front edge of which is united to the edgefot' the recess, as shown Other means of forming the pocket in the recess b may, however, be adopted without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, the stitches around the edge e of the recess may be applied to the needles of a Branson or similar knitting-machine, and a seamless pocket formed by the usual narrowin g and widening operation.
My improved stocking, owing to the ribbed portion of the tube of which it is composed, possesses the elasticity and clinging quality of a stocking composed entirely of ribbed fabric; but it is superior to a stocking which is ribbed throughout, in that the heel and the sole of the foot are composed of plain fabric, which is much more durable and more comfortable to the wearer than fabric having ribs. The improved stocking is also preferableto an ordinary cut-stocking, on account of having no side seams in the foot or leg.
I prefer that the portion 3 of the tube shall be plain throughout; but this portion of the tube may, if desired, have ribs formed in it at intervals, provided the number of said ribs is not sufficient to interfere with the object of my invention, as I consider that so long as this portion of the tube is substantially plain it is included within the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. The mode herein described of making stockings, said mode consisting in knitting a tube partly plain and partly ribbed, forming a recess in the plain portion of the tube, and fitting a pocket to said recess to form the heel, as set forth.
2. A stocking having the front portion of the leg and top of the foot of ribbed fabric, and the rear portion of the leg, the heel, and the sole of the foot of plain fabric, the leg and foot having no side seams.
