ROBERT e. RoPEE, oE
NEEDHAM, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE IV. SIMMONS d'. OO.,
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BICYCLE-TIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Pa-tent No. 408,438, dated August 6, 1889.
Application led May 16, 1889. Serial No. 311,028. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. ROPEE, of Needham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bicycle-Tights, of
which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct bicycle-tights that, although made of a single piece without insert-ions, they have the appearance of being and take the place of trousers and stockings and give the wearer the comfort and ease due to ordinary tights, combined with the durability of the best-made trousers. This object I attain by the method of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my garments. Fig. 2 is aview of the same, partly in section, to show more clearly the manner of making them.
In the drawings, A represents the trousers part of the garment, and Bthe hose. At the junction of the trousers and stockings the fabric is worked so as to form an overlay D Dl D2, and thus give the garment the appearance of being two separate articles-that is, a pair of trousers and a pair of stockingsand gives the garment an appropriateness not possessed by ordinary tights for out-of-door use. The overlay is formed as follows: The garment is knit from the waist down to the point at which the overlay is to be formed. Then the needles are taped on, and a row of stitches are left, forming loops. Now the knitting is proceeded with until the required length is reached, (say two inches,) after which the part last knitted is lifted up and its lower set of stitches joined to the needles, the tape being withdrawn. Now proceed to knit the stockings, leaving the overlay D D D2 formed -as shown.
In making this improved garment I have adopted a number of minor improvementsin the manner of knitting, for instance. The trousers part are of plain work, while the stocking part is mock-ribbed, or four in -and one out; but the style of knitting and stitch may be changed, and, if desirable, the stocking part may be of differentkind of knitting-stitch and of different color from the trousers part.
A- representation to indicate a cord is formed as shown at 3 s, Fig. l.
The stocking part may be of six-ply, while the other parts are of four-ply, the change being made by adding a number of threads.
I re-enforce the seat E, Fig. 2, by doubling and interknitting the yarn, but still retain the continuity of knitting, so that the seat is even and without seam.
The fob-pocket P,Fig. l, is knitted in, some of the threads being dropped and taken up again when the pocket has reached the required length.
The hem for the gathering cord or tape (shown at T) and the overlay D D D2 areinknit and without a sewed or stitched seam.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a garment forming trousers and stockings of a continuous fabric, having an overlay D D D2 at the junction of the trousers and stockings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 13th day of May, A. D. 1889.
ROBERT G. ROPER.
