GEORGE WEST, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed February 20. 1904. Serial No. 194.501.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WEsT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Garment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a garment which is particularly simple in construction and highly efficient and practical in use, and to this end, it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of the parts of a garment as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters indicate corresponding parts parts 1 2, each having a leg-member and also i a body-member.
As illustrated, the body-'member of each part .1 2 covers a portion of the body opposite to the leg inclosed by the leg-member of said part, so that one of the parts of the garment, as 1, is formed with a leg-member 3 for the right leg, and a body-member 4 for a side. of the body or trunk other than the right side, preferably the left side, and the other part, as 2, is formed with a leg-member 5 for the left leg, and a body-member 6 for the side of the body or trunk other than the left side here shown as the right side, said parts 1 2 being also formed respectively at the bases of the body-members with openings 7 8 for the left and right legs, and at the tops of said body-members with open- Y a member 11 for inclosing one of the ings 9 10'for permitting the passage of the body.
The parts 1 2 are each usually formed with shoulders of the body, and with a sleevemember 12, and the body-members of said parts are preferably lapped upon each other at the front and rear, as best seen in Fig. 3.
The openings 7 8 usually extend from the point of divergence of the leg-members practically to the waist-line, and the openings 9 10 extend practically from the waist-line to. the collar, so that corresponding edges of y the body-members 4 6 are disposed at an i angle to each other.
'My garment may be provided with any suitable fastening means at the neck, but it is obvious that such fastening means may be dispensed with. Said garment may be composed of any desirable fabric, and is equally adapted for use as underwear, or pajamas, or as outer garments, such as working suits and overalls. Providing the garment is composed of knit-goods, the fabric may be so cut that when the garment is not in use the edges 14 extend parallel with the ribs of the fabric indicated by the lines (1, Figs. 1 and 2, and in planes substantially coincident with the side-edges of the body-members, thus distorting the position of the sleevemembers. hen a garment cut as described is upon the wearer, more or less fullness is provided over the abdomen and in the seat, and as the ribs of the knitted fabric forming the body-members there extend diagonally on the wearer's body, the garment readily stretches and conforms to the movement of the wearer. It will be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to any particular fabric or arrangement of the ribs thereof.
A garment constructed as described permits a maximum freedom of movement, closely fits the wearer, does not contain any loose projecting flaps, as ordinary union suits, and can therefore be worn with great convenience and comfort, and whenever desired, the garment readily opens at the bases of the body-members with minimum effort.
My garment will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description, and the accompanying drawing, and it will be particularlynoted that more or less change may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A garment comprising two parts, one
body-member for the left side of the body,
' opening for the right leg and a body-member y having a leg-member for the right leg and a and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg and a body-member for the right side of the body, substantially as and for the purpose specified. I
3. A garment comprising two parts, one I having a leg-member for the right leg and a body-member for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg and. a body-member for the right side of the body, corresponding edges of the body-members being arranged at an angle to each other, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
4. A garment comprising two parts, one having a leg-member for the right leg, an opening for the left leg and a body-member for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg, an opening for the right leg and a body-member for the right side of the body, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. A garment comprising two parts, one having a leg-member for the right leg, an opening for the left leg and a body-member for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg, an
for the right side of the body, said openings for the legs extending from the point of divergence of the leg-members topractically the Waist-line, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. A garment comprising two parts, one
body-member for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg and a body-member for the right side of the body, each of said body-members i 8. A garment comprising two parts, one i having a leg-member for the right leg and a body-member for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg and a body-member for the right side of the body, said body-members lapping upon each other at the front and rear, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. A garment comprising two parts, composed of knitted fabric, one part having a legmember for the right leg and a body-men1ber for the left side of the body, and the other part having a leg-member for the left leg and a body-member for the right side of the body, said body-members having the ribs of the knitted fabric composing the same arranged substantially lengthwise when the garment is not in use, and diagonally when said garment is on the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I, have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two attesting witnesses at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 4th day of Feb, 1904.
' GEORGE WEST. Witnesses:
