ST'IFFEN ER FOR SHlRT-COLLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,023, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed July 22, 1889.
To all whom/ it may conocrm Be it known that I, FREDRIC C. WEIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stiffeners for Shirt-Oollars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specificationr This invention has for its obj ect to provide a novel stiffener for the collars of Woolen, silk, and similar negligee shirts; and the invention consists, essentially, in a stiffener comprising sections adapted to be inserted beneath the collar and conform to the shape of the same, said sections being provided with a lap adapted to be secured to the body portion of the garment.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of my improved stiffener, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of a portion of a woolen or other shirt, showing the stiffener applied thereto.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention,l will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein=- The numerals 1, 2, and 3 indicate the united sections of the stiffener, and 4 the lap, which is adapted to be secured by stitches or other Serial No, 318,279. (No mddell) wise to the body 5 of a shirt beneath the collar 6. The stiffener is fashioned to conform approximately to the shape of the shirt-collar, and is composed of flexible wire, celluloid, zylonite, or other material suitable for the 55 conditions required. In the example shown the stilfener is composed of longitudinal and cross wires, which may be soldered together, and the construction is such that when the lap 4 is sewed or otherwise secured to the garo ment the main body of the stiifener sustains the collar, and when the garment is buttoned the stiffener acts to support the collar in proper sinooth position, which is desirable and comfortable in woolen, silk, or other negligee 45 shirts.
Having thus described m y invention, what I claim is-- The improved stiffener for shirt-collars, comprising sections adapted to be inserted 5o beneath the collar and conform to the shape of the same, said sections being provided with a lap adapted to be secured to the body of the garment, substantially as described.
