SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,483, dated February 7, 1882. Application filed September 22, 1881. (No model.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FANNiE C. Morir, o Catskill, in the countyot' Greene and State ot' New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates to linen or dress shirts worn bymen and having stift'ened bosoms. Heretofore suchl shirts have generally been made with the bosoms sewed all around the edges to the shirt-bodies but they have also been made with the bosoms attached to the bodies only at the neck and adjacent portions. Shirts wherein the bosoms have been sewed all around the edges to the bodies are objectionable, in that they are necessarily wrinkled more or less whenever the shirt-bodies are wrinkled by the actions ot' the wearer and the movements of his clothing. When the bosoms are attached only to the bodies of theshirts at the neck portion they readily become awry and oftentimes fail to sit well or opposite the neck-opening of a vest. Such shirts are, moreover, very difficult to properly launder.

The object ot' my improvement is to produce a shirt which shall not be liable to the objections which pertain to either class of shirts.

To this end the improvement consists in the combination, with the body of a shirt, of an extra front attached at the shoulder-seams and to a part or the whole of the front portion of the sleeve-seams, but unattached to the shirtbody below, and a bosom united to the extra front, whereby the body of the shirt may ruck up and wrinkle or shift upward or sidewise without affecting the bosom, and, moreover, provision is afforded for keeping the bosom in its proper place.

The improvement also consists in such combination of parts when the extra front is also united to the neckband and the shirt is open at the back.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.4

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both gures.

A designates the body of the shirt. It may be of the usual or any suitable form, and is 5o representedas open at the back.

S designates the sleeves.

B designates an extra front, which may be of the same material as the body of the shirt, cr of a finer material, if desirable. ltis united to the body A at the neckbandb` of the shirt along the shoulder-seams D and along part or the whole of the front portion of the sleeve seams E. It m'ay also be attached to part of the side seams, J. Itis unattached to the body below the sleeve seams, and as here shown 6o tapers or is graduated with ogee curves down- `ward to about the center of the waist portion` of the body.

G designates the bosom ofthe shirt. It may be of the ordinary or any other suitable form and make, and it is attached by sewing to the neckband C and to the extra front B along the whole or part of its side edges.

H designates an opening in the back of the shirt, extending through the neckband and 7o from it downward.

It will be seen that by my improvement the body of the shirt can work up without affecting thebosom and therefore that the principal cause of wrinkling the bosom is obviated. Moreover, it will be seen that the shirt-bosom will e'ectually be kept in its proper position and prevented from becoming awry or disarranged.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to 8o secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the body of a shirt, of an extra front attached at the shoulder-seams and to a part or the whole of the front sleeveseams, but unattached to the shirt-body below, and a bosom united to the extra front, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the body ot' a shirt having au opening in the back, of an extra front attached at the neckband, the shoulder 9o seams, and to a part or the whole of the front of the sleeve-seams, but unattached to the shirt-body below, and a bosom united to the extra front and to the neckband, but unattached to the shirtbody elsewhere, substan- 95 tially as specified.
