GEORGE C. THOMAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,933, dated June 17, 1873 application led Apriiiv, 1813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. THoMAs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view ot a shirt embodying my said improvement, and Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the bosom removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both iigures of the drawing.
My invention has for its object to provide a shirt made open at the front, whereby the same may be more easily adjusted; and the improvement consists in the form of the front of the shirt and the manner of attaching the bosom thereto, all of which will be more fully.
understood by the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the shirt-body, which is made of any suitable cloth, and is provided with a neck-band, a, in the usual manner. The body is made open at the front its entire length, and is so arranged as to allow one of the parts to lap over or upon the other, and are secured one to the other by means of buttons d e, as shown in Fig. 2. B is the bosom, which is made of linen, plaited in the usual manner, and shaped in the form shown in Fig. l. One side of the upper portion of the bosom is permanently attached to the lower edge of the neck-band and to the shoulder of the body, and is also attached or stitched along its side for about one-half its length to the body; the opposite side of the bosom extends across over the lap in the body and is secured to the same by buttons e and f, as shown in Fig. 1, thus leaving the lower portion of the bosom loose or disconnected from the front of the body. I sometimes construct the bosom independent of or separate from the body, and attach the same thereto by means of buttons, as shown at g h, Fig. 1, the object of which is to allow the bosom to be changed when desired.
It will be observed that theadvantages of a shirt open at the front, and the bosom attached as described, are several: First, the shirt is more easily adjusted; second, the bosom may be readily changed, or is more easily ironed; and, third, the lower portion of the bosom being disconnected from the body, the former is prevented from being wrinkled horizontally by the forward bending of the wearer, as the lower portion of the bosom will slide downward on the body during the descent of the breast, and will move upward as the wearer resumes a natural position, thus adapting itself to the position of the body.
Having described my invention, I claim- The shirt-body A made open at the front, in combination with the bosom B, one side ot' which is attached to the body in the manner described, so that when the opposite-side of the bosom is buttoned to the body, the lower portion of the bosom will be disconnected from the shirt-front, as specied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 7th day of February, 1873.
GEORGE C. THOMAS. Witnesses:
