SHIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed June 14, i913. Serial No. 773,669.
To all ilk/10m it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS D. LIVINGSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its object is to provide certain'new and useful improvements in shirts, notably shirts made of silk, mercerized cotton and other soft materials, and whereby the bosom portion at the collar bone of the wearer is protected against undue wear and soiling, thus insuring long life to the shirt.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of protecting flaps underlying the bosom portions at the collar bone of the wearer, the upper edges of the protecting flaps being secured to the shirt at the junction of the shirt body and neckband. The front edges of the protecting flaps terminate approximately at the front median line of the shirt and the said front edges are provided with suitable fastening devices for detachably connecting the front edges with each other.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front perspective view of the upper portion of a shirt provided with the improvements; Fig. 2 is a sectional rear elevation of the same with the. lower corner of one of the protecting flaps turned up; and
- Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same as applied, the section being on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The body A of the shirt is of the usual construction and provided with a neckband B. Two protecting flaps C underlie the bosom portions at the collar bone of the wearer, the upper edges of the said flaps C- extending between the neck portion of the body A and the neckband B, it being se-' cured thereto by stitches D -which fasten the neckband B to the neck portion of the body A. The front edges of the protecting flaps C terminate approximately at the front median line of the shirt, and the said front edges are provided with suitable fastening devices E, E, such as buttons and'buttonholes, to permit of detachably connecting the front edges of the flaps C with each other. It is understood that when the shirt ]S to be donned and is open at the front then the flaps C are likewise disconnected at the front edges, and after the shirt is put on the front edges of the protecting flaps C are connected with each other by the fastening devices E, E.
By arranging the flaps C in the manner described they form pads to protect the desired portion of the shirt opposite the collar bone of the wearer, at the same time preventing perspiration from reaching the protected portions of the bosom, as such perspiration is taken up by the flaps C. It will also be noticed that by having the flaps the corresponding bosom portions are padded to prevent undue wear by the action of the lower edge of the outer member of the collar F, whichlower edge tends to rub against the bosom portions mentioned especially when the wearer turns the head. around or bends the head forward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:'
1. A shirt of soft material open at the front and provided with protecting flaps of soft material and having their upper edges secured between the neck portion of the shirt and the neckband thereof, the re maining portions of the flaps being detached from the shirt, whereby they may hang loosely down under the front portion of the shirt, the flaps extending approximately from the yokes of the shirt and overlying one another at the front median line of the shirt, the overlying portions being detachably secured together.
2. A shirt provided with protecting flaps of soft material and having their upper edges secured between the neck portion of the shirt and the neck band thereof, the remaining portions of the flaps being deit: mieew tachedl from the shirt, whereby they may name to this specification in the presence of hmg loosely downflunder thedfront portion two subscribing Witnesses. o the shirt, the a s exten ing approximately from the YOKILGS of the shirt andi LOUIS LIVINGSTON 5 overlapping one another at the front median Witnesses:
line of the shirt. T114310. G. HQSTER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my PHILIP D. RoLLHAUs.
