Description

UNITED STATESUPATENT OFFICE.
J OHN C. TURRELL, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEWYORK, ASSIGNOR T0 EARL & WILSON, OF TROY, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
COLLAR.
To 'nZl whom it may concur-n Be it known that 1-, Jon): C. TURRELL, a
citizen of the United States. residing at M is commonly known as the soft collar.
The soft cbllar likewise has its objections but these are of a different nature than those. pertaining to the stiff collar. Probably the most. serious complaint about the soft collar is that it fails to maintain its shape even when first put of, much less when it is worn for three or four hours, or becomes damp as by perspiration.
This invention therefore relates to improvements in soft collars of the well known turn down type and consists in the provision of a collar with novel removable supporting means adapted to hold the same when in position upon the neck of a wearer in extended. sigl'itly andcomfortable posi tion. This supporting or stiffening means may. be made of card board. celluloid. or other similar, material, the cost of which in quantities is practically negligible and there fore my device while serving to overcome the objections above noted adds little, if
i any, cost to the present manufactm'e of this 'typeof 'collar. It is to be pin-ticularly noted in this connection that the supporting or stiffening means, which l have devised. is employed in connection with the. neck band of the collar. l have found even with starehed collars that the neck band is the first to give way under any and all conditions, and that so long as the neck band is maintained in proper position the outer fold will invariably present a respectable appearance.
It further consists in providing a collar in which the rear button hole does not extend through the band and one which may be easily laundried.
Figure l is a view in elevation of a collar Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 1917. Serial No. 144,824.
embodying this invention with parts broken away "showing the position of the supporting members between the. plies of the neck band.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the outside 01 the neck band and inside of the. turn down portion. I
Fig. 3 is a sectional view 3-3 f Fig. 2.
Fig. r is a sectional view taken along; the line -t-4 of. Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view 2 and Fig. (i is a sectional view illustrating the tucked edges of the plies at the divided portion of the neck band.
lhe coller is provided with a neck band 1 and an outer fold 2 secured thereto in the usual manner. Biil't'on holes 3 and t are provided to secure the-collar to the band of a shirt in the usual manner and button 4 and buttouhole 5 are provided to secure the neck baud near the top of the collar at the front.
The neck band is composed, preferably, of iwo plies or thicknesses of suitable material which are sewed together along the front and end edges and a portior. of the lower edge. The flap member or outer fold is sewed to the neck band near the top thereof.
A portion of the neck band at the bottom is preferably divided, asindicatcd at 7. In making the collar the plies are. not sewed together the full distance at the bottom. I prefer to tuck in the edges 8 of the plies at this point to prevent raveling of the material and to provide a small shoulder 9 adjacent the adjusted position of the rear end of the supporting members 10. In the event that the edges of the plies are short. strips of material may be sewed to the plies at this point to provide for this purpose. In Fig. 5 such strips a re indicated by reference character 8.
The button hole 6 at the back of the collar is made in the inner ply of the neck band. lhis may be placed where the. in; folded portion 8 comes which gives suflicient body for the button hole. It will be seen that the button will have the outer ply 11 between it and arravat that may be worn, thereby preventing any interference in its adjustment, as well as injury thereto.
In order to secure the collar of soft maalong the line' along the, line 5-5 of Fig.
terial in proper adjustmenhj provide the! supporting members 10 in thetneck band be tween the plies thereof and extending from the front of the collar along' a portion of curb side. The supporting members are interclningmible in that they may be used on either side. liy providing in the member lo a cutout portion 12 in its upper edge to pass under the button l and another cutout portion 13 in the lower edge near the front, to pass over the button hole 3, the front edge ll may be. brought against the front edge 15 of the collar at the upper part thereof. On the other side of the collar the supporting member 10 is adapted to abut against the upper button hole :3.- This arrangement permits suliicient overlap 'iing of the ends of the supporting members when the collar is placed on the neck of a wearer to insure proper adjustn'ient of the collar. The supportinp members ll) are of proper width to lit between the upper and lower parts of the neck band 1.
It is preferreill to make the supporting members 10 of celluloid but any other stiff material may be used that will not wilt from perspiration from the neck of the wearer.
To place the supporting members 10 in position, they are passed through the divided portion 7 of the neck band and between the plies of the neck band as will be readily apparent.- \Vhen desired, the
' supporting members may be easily removed in the same manner.
In this novel arrangement of collar, the inner and outer surfaces of the neck band are preferably unbroken, except by button holes, which makes it comparatively easy to laundry.
Strapsor loops 16 are provided on the inner surface of the flap member :2 at the front to hold in place and facilitate the tyin; of a cravat hat. I claim is:
1. In a soft lurn down collar. a neck band, an outer flap secured thereto. the said neck band having two thicknesses divided at the bottom adjacent the rear button-hole. a pluralitv of sl iff removable members adapted to be inserted through the. said divided portion and adjusted at the front and sides in the neck band to maintain the same in desired ai'ljuslment and said neck band provided with a l utt n-hole. in its inne ply at the divided portion and its out r ply adapted to cover a button that is placed in the said button-hole.
l. Ina soft turn down collar, a neck band,
an outer flap secured thereto, the said neck hand having; a rear portion thereof divided. at the bottom. a plurality of stilf removable members adapted to be inserted through the said divided portion and adjusted in the neck band at the front and sides thereof to maintain (be same in desired adjustment and said neck band provided with a button hole in its inner ply at the divided portion and its outer ply adapted to cover a button that is placed in the said button-hole.
3. In a soft turn down collar, a neck band composed of two or more plies, an outer flap secured thereto, the said neck band having a rear portion extending on each side of the rear button hole, divided at the bottom, a plurality of removable members adapted to be inserted through the said divided portion and fitting between the plies of the neck band and upper and lower edges tl' :eof at the front and sides to maintain the Same in desired adjustment and said neck band provided with a button-hole in its inner ply at the divided portion and its outer ply adapted to cover a button that is placed in the said button-hole.
l'. in a soft turn down collar, in combinatiou. a neck band comprising inner and outer plies of soft material, the edges of which are secured to each other, except a small por tion on the lower edges adjacent the real button-hole. a plurality of stiffening members extending from a point adjacent the rear button hole to a point beyond the front button-hole and a l'mtton-hole in the inner ply of the neck band at the back of the collar and the outer ply thereof adapted to cover a. button that is placed in the said but ton-hole.
:3. In a soft turn down collar, a neck band, an outer flap secured thereto, the said neck band having a portion thereof divided atthe bottom, portions of the plies comprising the. neck band folded inwardly at the said divided portion and forming shoulders. a plurality of mendiers adapted to be inserted through the said divided portion and secured in the front and sides of the ueek hand between the said shoulders and front of the. collar and said neck band provided with a button hole in the inner flap'at the divided portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
