To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GOTTFRIED HEPPDING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Settings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved seting for diamonds'and other precious stones, in which the scalloped portions at the base of the cramps are arranged in such a manner as to form a very ornamental base for the setting, which enlarged scallops can also be used as pockets or auxiliary settings for smaller stones, pearls, 850., so as to produce a combined setting by means of dies, that impart to the studs or other articles which have been made therefrom a highly-ornamental appearance.

The invention consists of a setting for diamonds or other precious stones, which is provided with a number of cramps, and enlarged pocketshaped scallops at the lower ends of said cramps, said scallops being provided with interior shoulders or seats in case the enlarged scallops are used as auxiliary pockets or settings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical transverse sections of the male and female dies for making my improved diamond-settings, said dies making, respectively, the plain scalloped settings and scalloped settings with interior seats. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the upper or plunger die, shown, respectively in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the male dieshown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a top view of the female die shown in Figs 1 and 2, and Figs. 7 and 8 represent a side view and vertical transverse section of my improved plain scalloped setting, and Figs. 9 and 10 are a vertical central section and a top View'of my improved setting provided with iuterior seats in the enlarged scallops at the base of the setting.

My improved diamond-setting is produced from a star-shaped blank of the usual shapeby means of dies, (shown in Figs. 1 to 5,) the dies shown in Figs. 1 and 3 being used when a setting with enlarged scallops is to be made, and the dies shown in Figs. 2 and 4 when a setting with enlarged scallops having interior seats or pockets is to be made. For producing the setting a, the setting is provided with the usual cramps, which are connected at their lower ends by enlarged pocket-shaped scallops b, of outwardlyprojecting shape, as shown in Figs. 7 and 10, which enlarged scallops impart a very ornamental character to the setting, as a larger base is imparted by them to the setting. The setting is formed by one blow of the male or plunger die 0, which is formed with a tapering center portion, d, and tapering side ribs, d, beveled toward the center portion, d, at their lower ends, intermediate grooves, d for the cramps being formed between the ribs 01'. The plunger or male die 0 fits into the female or base die D, which corresponds to the shape of the setting to be produced, sufficient space being left between the faces of the two dies to produce the setting a. (Shown in Fig. 7.) When the seallops b are to be provided at their inner side with a seat or shoulder, b, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the male die is provided at the lower beveled ends of the side ribs, (1, with offsets or shoulders e, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. These offsets produce a corresponding seat in the inner edges of the scallops of the setting and a thin flange above the same, which flange can be readily bent inwardly over a small diamond, pearl, or other small stone, so as to utilize the enlarged scallops as auxiliary pockets or settings, which form a cluster around the main setting formed by the cramps which hold the larger center stone or pearl. When the setting is used with a cluster of stones in the enlarged scallops, the setting is passed through another die, by which an inward inclination is imparted to the cramps,whereby the appearance of the setting is improved.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A diamond-setting consisting of a number of cramps, and enlarged outwardly-projecting scallops forming exterior jewel-receiving pockets at the base of the setting between the lower ends of the prongs, substantiallyas set forth.

2. A diamond-setting consisting of a number of cramps and enlarged scallops at the base of said cramps, said scallops being provided with interior seats or shoulders, sub stantially as set forth.
