UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CATHARINE MOFADDEN, O F OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENTIN KNlTTlNG-SATCHELS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,959, dated January 19, 1875; application tiled July 10,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CATHAEINE McFAD- DEN, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Knitting-Satchel, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure l represents a longitudinal central section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a satchel or bag for carrying knitting, crochet, and similar work; and consists in a longitudinal partition, whereby are formed separate compartments for holding the material and the Work, in combination with needle-holders, which are affixed on opposite edges of the satchel, and receive the points of the knitting-needles when they are not in use, in such a manner as to retain the needles, and at the same time protect their points from injury. y
The needle-holders are aixed on the satchcl l by means of elastic strips, whereby they accommodate themselves to needles of any size, and the satchel is provided with a retaininghook, whereby it can be secured upon the waist-belt of a person.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my Satchel or bag, which is made of flexible material, and B is its partition, which extends longitudinally through the Satchel, so as to form therein distinct and separate compartments. One of these compartments serves to hohl the material to be worked, such as a ball or skein ot' yarn, while the other compartment serves to hold the work itself, the latter being placed in its compartment, and gradually falling inas it progresses and becomes larger.
The material to be worked is drawn out through its own compartment, so that the twothe material and the Work-are completely isolated from each other, and are not liable to become entangled.
Opposite each other, on the mouth or edge of the bag, are secured stripsO, ot elastic or any other suitable material, to which are at'- xed caps D, which are preferably made conical, as shown, and constitute the needle-holders. These holders I) serve to receive the knittingneedles when they are not in use, so as to retain the needles on the satchel or bag, and avert displacement or loss.
In disposing of the needles their points are placed in the holders I), whereby they are held, and their said points are protected from injury, and by reason of the elastic supports C the distance of the needle-holders can be increased or diminished, s o that they accommodate themselves to needles of any size.
Through the strain exerted by the elastic strips O the knitting-needles are securely held in place, and by my invention the needles, together with the material and Work, are held in or upon one and the same satchel, and away from each other, so that neither in any inauner interferes withthe other.
My satchel is intended to be attached on the waist-belt ofthe person using it, to which end it is provided with a hook or clasp, E, which can be conveniently hung on such belt. The
,Satchel is thus Within convenient reach, while it is not cumbersome to the person.
The Satchel is provided with a pocket, F, which is made to open at or near the top and on the front face ofthe Satchel, so that it can be reached with facility.
This pocket F forms a convenient receptacle for small articles, such as crochet -needles, scissors, and other paraphernalia, and by means thereof the utility of my satchel is greatly enhanced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A knitting-Satchel provided with a longitudinal partition, B, for the purpose specilied, in combination with needle-holders D substantially as described.
2. The needle-holders D, aflixed to a knitting-Satchel by means of elastic strips O, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The retaininghook E, in combination with a knitting-Satchel, constructed substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
OATHARINE MCFADDEN.
