Description
.No. 69!,364. Patented Ian. 2|, I902, N. P. DENCKLA.
WORK HOLDER.
(No Modpl.)
WITNESSES: INVENTOR.
8W I ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT NELSINE PEPPER DENOKLA, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
WORK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,364, dated January 21, 1902. Application filed March 14. 1901. Serial No. 51.147. (No modelJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLsINE PEPPER DENOKLA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Work Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othcrs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a sewing-work-supporting device adapted to be attached to a persons leg for holding one end of fabrics while manually sewing them; and the object of my invention is to provide a resilient clamping-rin g thata person can spring around the leg either above or below the knee and having secured to it a spring-controlled sewing-work-clamping vise. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved band-forming and sewing-worksupporting device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is an end view of the spring-clamping clasp, showing the opposite end view from that shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a section through the fastening-button.
Similar figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a round fiat divided ring of resilient material, preferably steel. Its free ends 2 and 3 are made blunt by curving them outward and backward from the periphery of the ring. To this ring at a point opposite its free rings I secure, preferably by riveting, a wedge-shaped fastening-button hwhich comprises athin flat head portion 4a and a shank 4 The head of the button is wedgeshaped at its opposite side edges 4 To this wedge-button I secure detachably the lower jaw 5 of a clamping-vise 6. This jaw contains a T-shaped slot 7, having tapering or wedge-shaped sides 7 extending across the central portion of its under side, that is adapted to slide on the button at one side and fit tight on the button at the central portion of the jaws width, and is thus quickly put on or taken off of the ring. This arrangement also enables me'to interchange the work-holding device for other devices-such, for instance, the band-forming device shown in my application Serial No. 32,02et.
The upper jaw 8 is pivotally attached to the lower jaw bya pivotal bolt 8 A wedgeshaped space 9 is formed in one end of the jaws, in which a spring 10 is secured, and a recess 9 is formed in each jaw, which forms a clearance-space for the spring when the upper jaw is pressed against the lower one. One end of this spring bears on and is secured to the lower jaw, and the opposite end bears on and is secured to the upper jaw and holds them constantly under resilient pressure apart, thus holding the opposite ends 11 and 12 of the jaws 5 and 8 forcibly together. These ends are the cloth-clamping ends of the cloth-clamping device. The opposing surfaces of these jaws may be fluted or serrated by flutes or corrugations 13, although they may be left smooth, if desired.
The operation of the device is as follows: The spring-ring is preferably sprung over the leg of an operator, either above or below the knee, and the jaws of the clamping-vise are sprung apart and one end of the work to be sewed on is placed and clamped between them, while the opposite end of the work is held by the hand of the person doing the sewing.
My invention is simple, useful, and easily operated.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sewing-work-holding device, the combination of the springring having a wedge-shaped button at the central portion of its circumference with a pair of vise-jaws pivotally secured together having a spring arranged at one of their ends to hold their opposite jaws together by its resilient tension and having the opposing surfaces of said jaws corrugated and a tapering T-shaped recess in the bottom of the lower jaw arranged to slide over said button at its widest side and to fit tight upon it at its central portion, substantially as described.
2. In a sewing-work-holding device, the
combination of the spring-steel, open-ended said lower jaw and the spring arranged to 10 supporting-ring having a wedge-shaped and hold the upper and lower jaws normally to- .T- shaped fastening-button comprising the gether, substantially as described.
thin, fiat head having Wedge-shaped 0r taper- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 ing sides, with the lower clamping-jaw conin presence of two Witnesses.
