DRAPERY CLAMP- Filed June 6, 1950 Fig. 2
Patented Mar. 31, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRAPERY CLAMP Ben B. Coulter, Omaha, Nebr.
Application June 6, 1950, Serial No. 166,441
This invention relates to the class of fastening devices and more particularly to a device for supporting draperies upon a drapery rod.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which will enable the user to easily remove or to hang drapes in a minimum amount of time.
A further object of this invention is to provide a drapery clamp which will be readily enga-geable upon a drapery rod and which will hold drapes without necessitating permanent installation of the clamps thereon.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a device which will eliminate the necessity to sew hooks or like members on drapes.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of drapery clamps and are strong, durable, highly eflicient in operation, simple of construction and manufacture, capable of being easily used by any housewife, and which will be relatively inexpensive. r
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the drapery clamps, the preferred embodiment of which ha been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing it operatively installed upon a drapery rod securing the drapes in position relative to the rod;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device shown in its locked position when not in use;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the device shown in its locked position;
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the drapery clamp shown in the locked position.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral l generally designates a drapery rod on which it is desired to secure drapes l2 or like members. In order to support the drapes l2 relative to the rod I0 there is provided the drapery clamp generally indicated at M which comprises the present invention.
The drapery clam I4 includes a pair of opposed jaw members l6 and 18 which are provided with inwardly extending lugs 20 and 22 respectively which are readily secured by means of rivets or pin 24. A coil spring 26 is provided for continuously urging the teeth portions 28 and 30 of the jaw members l6 and I8 respectively together. The teeth portions 28 and 30 are serrated for intermeshing engagement so as to securely clasp the drapes l2.
2 Claims. (Cl. 248-215) Pivotally secured by means of a rivet 32, constituting a pivot pin, to the jaw member I6 is a hook member 3'4 which is provided with a hook portion 36. Projections 38 are formed on the jaw member l6 at the portion most adjacent the jaw member I8 for lockingly holding the hook member 34 in a horizontal position relative to the jaw members in order that the device may be easily stored. Other projections 40 are formed on the central portion of the upper part of the jaw member IS in order to securely lock the hook 34 in a vertical position relative to the jaw members when it is desired to use the device for supporting the drapes.
In use, to secure the drapes l2 relative to the rod II] it is merely necessary to depress the portions of the jaw member remote from the teeth portions 28 and 30 thus opening the jaw members and then to insert the drapes l2 within the compass of the jaw members, then releasing the jaw members. The hook portion 36 is then positioned about the rod 10'.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this clamp is readily apparent, further description is deemed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and the accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the exact embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A drapery supporting device comprising a air of jaw member pivoted together intermediate their ends, a spring operatively connected with said jaw members and urging said members together, a hook for suspending said jaw members, said hook including a, shank having an eye at one end, a pivot pin fixed to one of said jaw members and being located in said eye to thereby pivotally connect said hook to said one of said jaw members, a pair of spaced projections fixed to said one of said jaw members at one end thereof, a second pair of projections fixed to said one of said jaw members intermediate the ends thereof, and the shank of said hook being rotatable to positions to engage between said pairs of said projections so that said jaw members may be selectively retained in a position with their general longitudinal axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shank of the hook and with their general 3 longitudinal axis normal to the longitudinal axis of the shank of the hook.
2. A drapery hook comprising a pair of vertically opening, opposed jaw members, a, hook member pivotally secured to one of said jaw members, said hook member including an elongated shank having an eye at one end and a hook at the other end, said shank being pivotally secured to said one jaw member at said eye, means on said one jaw member for preventing pivotal movement of said hook from selected positions with respect to said one jaw member, said means comprising pairs of spaced projections on said one jaw memher, said shank being secured between a selected pair of said projections.
