VANITY CASE.
Application led June l1, 1,925.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Fnrrz R. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State ot Rhode lsland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, ot' which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to vanity cases or boxes adapted for the accommodation ot powder'.
The essential objects of my invention are automatic delivery ot' a certain quantity of powder, and in the convenient and available location ot the lattern Further objects are ready accessibility to the powder supply, and siniplicit)7 and inexpensiveness of construction.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such com binations of parts as tall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specicat-ion- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closed vanity case embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a transverse section of the same,
Figure 3, a detail view of a powder pad or putt,
Figures l and 5, top plan views ot the closure member showing the parts in closed and in partially open positions respectively, and
Figure 6, a bottom plan view of the same.
Like reference characters indicate like parts through out the views.
In the form of my invention herein shown the case comprises a box or body 8, and cover 9 connected with the body by an external hinge 10. The body comprises a botL tom or base 12, and a side wall 13 provided with an intermediate annular shoulder 14, above which is a projection 15 opposite the hinge. Integral with the top of the wall 13 is a downwardly inclined internal annular [lange 16 provided with a horizontal annular lip portion 17. The flange and lip 'form a partition with a central opening 13. Below this partition is the compartment 19 Yforming the container for the powder. The closure 21 for the opening consists of a plate 22 having a lateral bead 23 adapted to rest on the lip 17, and a flange 24E depending from the bead adai'ited to trictionally enter the opening 18, and be maintained compara- Serial No. 38,368.
tively rigid with the partition. In the center of this plate is a rivet or pivot member 25 upon which is pivoted a movable plate 26 rotatably engaging the lower ','r'ace of the closure plate provided with an elevated peripheral operating finger 2T passing through a marginal arcuate slot 28 in the plate 22. The closure plate has one or more, in this instance three, oblong arcuate holes 30 annularly arranged in an intermediate portion thereof. Similarly' arranged openings 32 in. the movable plate register with the holes 30. The openings are formed in ,this instance by rutting and bending from the material ot the plaie 2G downwardly inclined tongues or scoop members 33, integral with the plate, and constituting the boundary ot' one edge oi the several openings 32, as at 3l, which boundary is radially disposed, and transverse to the holes 30. Each scoop member or tongue 33 comprises in this instance ay central or body portion 35 with upturned lateral lips 36.
Then the plate 26, by the manual oper'L tion ot the finger 27, is turned in the direc tion of the arrows shown in Figures 4 and 5, the members 33 scoop powder from the supply in compartment 19. The powder is torced upwardly along the inclined faces of the scoops to points above the plane ot' the plate 22 where the advance of the plate 26 masses the elevated powder into a small pile upon the plate 22 adjacent one end of each hole. One such pile of powder is diagrammatically indicated by 38 in Figure 4. In Figure 5 the plate 26 is shown in intermediateposition of progress, and Figure 4 shows the position of said plate after the completion of the pile formation, with the holes 30, completely closed. The piles of powder are in convenient and available position tor the user to touch with a powder putt' or pad 4 0.
The depression in the partition is intended for the accommodation oi the powder pufi when not in use.
rlhe cover 9 comprises a top 14- and side lo provided with a marginal recess 1T adapted to receive the projection l5 when the cover is closed. A. mirror 49 is held against the iop Lift by a retaining ring 50.
The closure is removable trom theopening 18 by the insertion of a linger nail or sharp tool beneath the bead or shoulder 23 and lifting or prying the same. When the closure plate is removed the compartment 19 is accessible for a fresh supply ot powder.
lll() I claim n l. In a vanity case, a box comprising a bottom, a side, a closure plate supported by the side above the bottom and provided with a hole, a plate loosely engaging the lower face of the closure plate movable therebeneath and provided with an opening, and a downwardly directed scoop member upon the movable plate beside the opening in alignment with the hole.
2. In a vanity case, a box, a partition in the box provided'with an opening, a closure member in the opening provided with a hole, a plate pivotally engaging the closure member, and an inclined scoop member on the plate registrable with the hole when the plate is turned.
In a vanity case, a' box, apartition carried by the box provided with an opening, a closure member comprising a plate, a peripheral shoulder on the plate overlapping the partition around the opening, and a flange depending from the shoulder fric- V tionally engaging the partition in the opening saidV plate being provided with a hole, and a plate pivotally mounted on the lower face of the closure plate concentrically thereof, and a radially disposed depending inclined scoop member carried by the second plate registrable with the hole vwhen the last mentioned plate is turned.
4. In a vanity case, a box, a cover engageable with the top ofthe box, a partition inthe upper portion ofthe box below the cover and providedwith an opening, a plate upon the partition closingl theopening and provided with a curved slot and with a hole, a pivot member in the plate concentric with the slot, a second plate mounted upon the pivot member in contact with the first plate and provided with an opening equidistant with the hole from the pivot member, a depending scoop member integral with the second plate adjacent the last mentioned opening, and an elevated linger on the second plate extending loosely through the slot.
5. In a vanity case, a box, a cover hingedly connectedto the box, a partition supported in the top of the box provided with a depressed central portion and with an opening in the central portion, a closure member in the opening provided with a hole, a plate pivotally engaging the lower face of the closure member, an .inclined scoop member on the plate registrable with the hole when the plate is turned. n
6. In a vanity case, a box, a cover. hingedly connected to the box, a horizontal partitioncarried by the box provided with an opening, a closure member in the opening provided with annularly disposed holes, a plate pivotally mounted upon the closure member concentrically of the holes provided'with annularly arranged openings registrable with the holes, and radially disposed downwardly directed scoop members adjacent the last mentioned openings comprising inclined body portions integral with the plate and lateral upturned lips upon the body portions.
In testimony whereofI have aixed my signature.
FRITZ R. JOHNSON.
