This invention relates to improvements in compacts or vanity cases. I s 1 The primary object of this invention is the provision of a relatively simple, easily handledyand compact accessory for ladies use, which embodies accontainer having a latch key movably, associated in an improved relationw-ith the containenand embodying improved means for receiving cosmetics, such 0 as rouge,-lip-pa ste and the like. Thus the owner will invariably haveiher-key at hand, inasmuch as it is very infrequent that a lady will neglectutohave her vanity case about her ,person. 7

A further and important object of the invention is theprovision of a relatively simple and efliciently arranged compact adapted to cooperatively receive an important.key,such as the 'owners house keyand cosmetic material such as rouge andglip-paste, thedevice readily lending itself to ,-:tormation out of precious materials. 7 7

Other objects and advantages ofthis invention will be apparent duringthe course of the following detailed description.

The :bodyB'is preferably a casting. It is V intended that therdevice'shall be made of precious metal, such as gold. The said body includes upper and lower walls 10 and 11 respectively, each of whichincludesa substantiallytcircular disc-shaped head portion 13 and a-reduced shank 1 The saidwalls 10 and 11 are integrally connected in spaced relation'at the free ends of their shanks by means of an integral 'end' wall 15, At one entire side of the compact the said walls 10 and 11 are'also connected by a wall 17 extend- .lng from the wall 15 along the entire side of said compact and around the head or disc portions 13 ofsaid walls andterminating at a'shoulder 19. The compartmentorspace 9 20 between the walls 10 and ll is relatively shallow and open at the opposite side from the wall 17 for the entire distance from the end wall 15 to the shoulder 19; thelatter being placed short of the longitudinal axis of the compact, as is shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, This space or pocket 20 collapsibly receives a key 0 therein.

- The key is of the-usual type, including 'a preferably flat head; portion 25 and the kerfed shank 26. The head 25 is centrally pivoted by an adjustable rivet construction centrally upon the disc portions 13 of the up- 7 pera'ndlower walls lOsand 11. This rivet construction includes aheaded rivet body 28 inserted I through aligning openings in the disc'portions 13 and the key head 25; the head of the rivet 28 being relatively shallow and abutting on the top of the disc portion 13 of the wall 10. {The stem of the rivet 28 0 is internally threaded for detachably receivinga headed set screw 29 which isthreaded ,thereinto from the lower side ofthe disc 13 of the wall 11, as shown in Figurei, and these inter-threaded portions 28-and 29 may be adjusted to-vary the frictional clamping of-the head'of the key 0 between the walls 10 and 11, so as to vary the frictionalresistance .imposedto the swingin'g of the shank of the-key into or out of the; pocket 20, as can readily be understood. It is contemplated to make the compact of very precious materials, and in that event the lower head of the screw 29 may be suitably recessed for receiving a precious stone. The shank 26 of the key of course collapses into the stem portion of the body B, that is, between the shank portions 14.

To facilitate the projection of the shank 26 out of the pocket it is contemplated to provide an ejecting device 30, which consists of a slide bar body 31 at the inner side of the wall 15 within the pocket, paralleling the same. This slide bar 31 is provided with a headed handle 33, which extends through a horizontal slot 34 provided in the wall .15, so that the finger-nail or tip of the finger of a user may "laterally slide the handle 33 back and forth, and correspondingly .move the bar-'31 therewith. The bar 31 within the pocket '20 is provided with a normal extension 35 which lies between the shank of the key and the wall 17 preferably adjacent the latter, so that movement of the ejecting device 30 from the position shown in Figure '3 will cause an ejection of the shank of the key from the full line position shown in Figure 3 to the adjacent dotted line position shown in said view, and from which it may be further moved to the full operating position, as also shown by dotted lines in Fig ure 3. In the latter position the key at the juncture of the shank portion and head por- *tion thereof may abut against the shoulder '19 to permit the user to readily grasp the case body in his or her hand for the purpose of properly manipulating the key in a lock or latch.

The disc portion 13 of the wall 10 is provided with an annular upstanding wall 40 defining a pocket 41 which is counter recessed at 42 (see Figure 4) for the purpose of receiving a cake of rouge or similar cosmetic. This counter recessed portion 42 occupies substantia-lly'the lower half of the depth of thepocket 41,-and in the upper portion of said pocket there is adapted to be received a puff or rouge applicator, if desired. The upper annular edge of 'said'wall 4O is reduced at 45, best shown in Figure 1. At a po nt diametrically opposed from the shank por- 'tion of the body B the wall 40' has hinged therewith at 50, a disc-shaped cover 51 for the pocket 41, having an annular attaching flange 52 which is adapted to receive therein the reduced edge of the wall 40 to frictionally close the pocket 41. This lid or closure '51 is preferably counter-recessed to receive 'a mirror 55 therein in any approved relation. It maybe held in place by a split spring ring.

It is to be noted that the shanks or stem portions 14 of the plates 10 and 11 are of genperipherally provided an upstanding wall structure defining a lip-paste receiving pocket 60. This upstanding wall structure comprises side walls 61 and 62 and an end wall 63 contiguous with and integral with the wall 15 above described. The walls 61 and 62 of course integrally merge with the annular wall 40 defining the rouge pocket 41 and at the juncture therewith there is provided a bafie wall separating the pockets 41 and 60. At this baiile wall there is provided a closure 65 hingedly pivoted at 66 upon the body, which is provided with a reduced retaining flange '67 adapted to frictionally fit into the pocket in abutment with the inner surfaces at the tops of the walls 61 and 62 to frictionally hold the said closure shut. Both the closures 51 and are provided with nail engaging extensions 70 at their free ends,'to facilitate their lifting. It is to be noted that both

51 and 65 operate on parallel pivot axes, and when both of said closures are open access may be readily had'to the ma terials therein without mutual interference. N

A desirable feature of the invention is the to provision upon the inside surface of the wall 63 of a scraping extension 7 5 which projects into the pocket '60 spaced above the bottom thereof and which may have an edge against winch the owner may scrape her finger to '95 remove residue lip-paste. It is of course the intention in providing the elongated pocket 60 that the user will rub :her finger over the paste material in the pocket, starting .at the loo cient of the paste may be removed with facility for application. Any residue may be removed by scraping the tip of the finger .against the bar 75.

In further embellishment of the device the ejector head 33 may have a precious stone set therein.

The use of the device will be apparent. It visa well known fact that ladies seldom forget to take along their compacts and vanity cases. However, it is quite frequently that they neglect to take along house keys. By cooperatively associating the house key with the compact the problem of forgotten keys will be solved to advantage. In using the device with both of the

51 and 65 open, the user may eject the shank of the key C and hold upon the same to steady the container. When using the mirror the key may be collapsed in its pocket and the closure 65 shut. and of course the shank end of the container may then be held in the hand of the user with the lid 51 tipped back for exposing the mirror.

It is intended that the device may be made of any material. In the main it will be made of precious metals, such as gold, and either liO iii

engraved or enameled. The key when collapsed in the pocket 20 is completely hidden except for the edge which is visible at the opening slot of the pocket 20.

Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the class described, an

elongate fiat key-shaped casing including a disc-shaped head portionand a shank extending radially therefrom,said casing having a cosmetic receiving compartment in the head and a cosmetic receiving compartment in the shank opening to one face of the casing, and a key-shaped compartment beneath. 7

2. In a compact the combination of a case 'body including a substantially'circular discshaped receptacle head portion defininga pocket opening in a line normal thereto, a substantially radially extending shank portion rigidly connected With said disc-shaped head portion and having a pocket opening normal thereto and in the same direction as the pocket of said head portion, said pockets being adapted to receive cosmetic material, and said case body having a laterally opening pocket therein beneath the above mentioned pockets, of substantially the same shape as said case body head and shank.

3. In a compact the combination of a casing body having a pocket therein, a closure for the pocket, said pocket being adapted to receive lip-paste, and a scraper bar mounted;

in said pocket in position to permit the scraping of residue paste from the finger of an operator.

4. In a vanity compact the combination of a casing having a lip-paste receiving pocket of elongated shape, closure means operatively mounted at one end of said pocket, and a scraper bar in the pocket at the opposite end in position to'permit the scraping of residue paste from the finger of an operator after passing along said pocket in the direction of said bar.

5. In a compact, the combination of a casing having a paste receiving pocket therein,

and ascraper in the pocket in position to permit the scraping of residual paste from the finger of an" operator.

6. In a compact, the combination of a casing having a paste receiving pocket therein,

and a scraper carried by the casing in position to permit the scraping of residual paste from the finger of an operator.
