' Buckles. I
N.154,673. Patented Sept.1,874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. HIGINBOTOM AND" FREDERICK F. SMITH, OF VANDALIA, ILL.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,673, dated September 1, 1874; application led June 24, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be itvknown that we, CHARLES W. HIGIN- Bo'roM and FREDERICK F. SMITH, of Vandalia, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Buckles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to double detachable tongue-buckles; and consists in the combination of the usual frame and a peculiarly-shaped double tongue or tongue-plate, which may be entirely removed from the frame when adjust ing the straps, and afterwardreplaced.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center, showing the manner of coupling two straps. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the detachable double tongueplate. l i
A is the frame. Bis the detachable double tongue-plate. b b are the points, which project through the adjusting-holes in the strap or straps, and catch over the inner and upper edges of the frame. c c are arms projecting from opposite sides of the main tongue just behind the shoulder d, formed by the upward and inward curve ofthe point b. These arms are of a length to allow their passage through the frame in removing or replacing the tongue. e is a prolonged end of the main tongue B, eX- tending beyond the point b', so as to clamp the strap or straps betwe'en it and the framebar when the buckle is in use.
In using our invention, a strap is placed upon the tongue-plate (having rst been drawn through the frame) and the points b b forced through holes therein. drawn through the frame and placed upon the tongue-plate in like manner. The first strap is then drawn back through the frame, so that the point b catches against the end bar, and the prolonged end @projects thereunder, clamping the straps between it and said bar. The other strap is then drawn back through the frame, so that the point b catches against the other end bar of the frame, and the shoulder d projects thereunder. In detaching the tongue the shoulder d is forced up through the frame, and the rest is obvious.
The chief point of excellence in our invention is the adjustable connection of strap-work without stitching.
Having 4now fully described the construe tion and manner of using our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The improved buckle, consisting of a frame and detachable double tongue, substantialljT as described and shown.
2. The combination of frame A and detachable tongue-plate B, having points b b', prolonged end e, and shoulder d, substantially as described and shown. 1
In testimony that we claim the foregoing asl CHARLES W. HIGINBOTOM. FREDERICK. F. SMITH.
