UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. JOHNSON, OF PAXTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,397, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. JOHNSON, of Paxton, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to buckles which are applied to the straps without sewing or outside fastening, and is designed for bridles and other parts of harness, or for any other purpose to which buckles of analogous nature are applicable.
The buckle consists of a frame or casting having a loop at each end, each loop having an end transverse slot or strap-opening and a middle cross-bar, with tongues upon each side of said cross-bar, whereby a single strap may be looped and fastened in said buckle, as Well as two straps connected together by it, the
only fastening parts being the tongues on the cross-bar, in combination with the end loops holding the two straps, or the single strap as looped.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the buckleframe, showing the end loops and tongues upon each side of the cross-bar; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section, showing the strap or straps buckled according to my invention; and Fig. 3, a side and end view of the same.
Referring to these drawings, a b are the tongues upon each side of the middle crossbar, 0, and d d the end loops, provided each with a transverse strapopening, 0, through which the strap passes.
In connecting two straps or in looping one, the ends of the straps enter the loops, as clearly shown in the drawings and are pierced by the opposite tongues, and held bysaid tongues and the loops.
The deviceis asingle casting, without hinged parts or complications of any sort, and the straps are easily connected with it. It may be used in breeching-straps, bridle-reins, tugconnections, and various other parts of harness.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The buckle herein described, being a single casting, having a loop, d, at each end, provided with transverse openings 0 e, and having tongues a 1) upon opposite sides of a middle crossbar, c, for the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK W. JOHNSON.
Witnesses:
