Description
P. 1. WELSH & J. H. WELSH. Attachahle Rockers for Chairs;
NO. 138,826. PatentedMay13,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK J. WELSH AND JOHN H. WELSH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHABLE ROCKERS FOR CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,826, dated May 13, 1873; application filed 7 April 23, 1873.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PATRICK J. WELSH and JOHN H.'WELSH, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Attachable Rocker for Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of rockers for chairs, so constructed as to be readily attached to or removed from their connection with the legs without injury thereto, thus accommodating them at pleasure to the ordinary sitting-chairs; and other advantages are obtained -as the facilitatin g the transportation of rocking-chairs by the detachment of the rockers, thus accomplishin g the desirable end of packing them in much less space than when the rockers are permanently connected with them.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved rocker. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, at the line a: at, of Fig. 1, the lower ends of the legs B B being in connection with the rocker.
Like letters in both figures indicate the same parts.
A is an ordinary rockerprovided with our attachable device. One end of the rocker has a hole, a, to receive a hind leg, B, of a chair, and an oblong hole, I), for the reception of a front leg, B. The front hole I) is provided with a clamping-piece, 0, which is forced upon the outer side of the leg by means of the screw D, one end of which is permanently connected with it and the nut E, which turns in an opening, 0, of the rocker. The nut has a head, d, on its outer end for manipulating it. It is kept in its longitudinal position with the rocker by means of its annular groove 0 and the cross-key F in the lower side of the rocker. The holes a b of the rocker A should be somewhat larger than the legs to admit of India rubber or other packing G, as seen in the drawing, to prevent any. injury to the legs of a chair. It is preferable for the packing to entirely surround the legs, but, if desired, may
be placed only on opposite sides fore and aft, which receives the strain of the clamping-device.
We claim as our invention- A rocker, A, provided with holes a I), opening 0, clamping-piece O, screw D, and revolving nut E, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
