Description

3 YM A G N. I L R U B O (No Model.)
FOOT BEST-FOR PIANO STOOLS.
Patented July 10,1883.
I -T bwT UNITED STATES PATENT OFrIcE.
OLIVE R: BURLINGAME, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOOT-REST FoR PIANO-STOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 280,907, dated July 10, 1883,
Application filed June 15, 1882. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, OLIVE R. BURLINGAME, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Piano- Stools, of which the following is a specification.
It will be understood that the ordinary piano-stool in common use is designed for a full-sized person of adult age, as a small child seated upon such a stool has nothing to rest its feet upon, and thus steady the body while practicing upon the piano. The effort to sit securely upon the oval top of the stool causes an unnatural strain upon nearly every part of the body, especially the spinal column. It is very fatiguing, and often a serious injury to children not naturally strong. Furthermore, if the child is not firmly seated, it cannot have that perfect control of the hands and arms required for piano practice. Therefore the object of this invention is to combine a foot-rest with the ordinary piano-stool, upon which rest the feet of the child may be placed, and by which the body maybe held as steadily and easily as if the feet were placed upon the floor. I accomplish this purpose by the mechanical device illustrated in the accompanyings, in which- Figure" 1 is a sectional elevation taken on the dotted line A to B in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is an end section of this device, taken on the line 0 to D in Figs. 1 and 3, enlarged to the full size. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line E to F in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, showing the manner of adjusting the device beneath the seat of the pianostool, enlarged to full size. Fig. 5 is a developed plan of the stirrup, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged, but not to the full size.
In Fig. 1, a represents a simple form of a grooved angle-iron which is easily inserted in the socket, as shown in Fig. 4.
The bolt 17 is firmly'secured in the grooved angle-iron a, and passes through the slotted slide or extension-piece o, and an ordinary thumb-nut, d, (either with or without awasher,
as the case may require) is placed thereon.
the two pieces are easily and firmly held to gether by the bolt 1) and thumb-nut d, and no side or lateral motion is possible.
At the bottom of the piece 0 the cross-bar f (best shown in Fig. 3) furnishes the means of adjusting the stirrups g g, and to which the same said stirrups are bolted, as shown in Fig. 3, which shows a section of the instep of the stirrup. Fig.- 5 shows a developed plan, and Fig. 6 a side view, of the stirrup. These stirrups may be forged, or castin suitable metal, as may provethe most desirable. In Fig. 6 it will be observed that the back part is formed to fit the heel of the shoe, the back being turned upward at 71 to prevent slipping backward, while the side pieces, 1', at the instep prevent the foot from slipping off at the side.
The bracket in Fig. 4 (represented with the broken section of a piano-stool, 1,) is in the usual form used for similar. purposes, and is readily understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the piano-stool Zwith the angle-iron a, extensioubar 0, stirrups g g, bolt 19, and nut r2, made, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A foot-rest for a pianostool, composed of the angle-iron a, extension-bar c, stirrups g g, adjusting-screw b, and thumb-nut d, made and arranged substantially as set forth.
' 3. The combination of the stirrups g g, having guides h and i, all formed substantially as shown, with the bar '0 and angleiron a, made and adjusted substantially as specified.
oLIvE BURLINGAME.
