SANFORD G. SCARRITT,

OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,373, dated October 11, 1887.
Application filed August 16, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SANFORD G. SOARRITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Rests; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, whieh form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to secure a simple and effective foot-rest for reclining and other chairs capable of varied elevations and inclinations, and which, when not in use, can be readily retired from sight below the seatframe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective elevation of a reclining-chair with my improved foot-rest extended and folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the foot-rest retired from sight. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the seat-frame, showing the attachment of the footrest thereon. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the track and the guide-piece therein. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are perspective views of the foot-rest in its several positions of elevation andinclination.
In the drawings like letters indicate like parts.
A is the horizontal frame or base of the footrest, rigidly attached to the projecting arm P, said arm having a longitudinal movement below the seat-frame through guide L and tracks K K.
S is a supporting crossbar, to which the projecting arm is attached, also the legs M, having rollers M,intended to give proper elevation to the foot-rest above the floor-level and to facilitate its extension and return.
B is the movable frame, hinged at F to the outer end of the base-frame A, its under edge fitting, when the frame is closed, within the base-frame. Both frames are provided with inwardly-projecting flanges having ratchetteeth E and E on the upper surface of the side flanges. The flanges form the seat for the frame or platform, that is to rest, when closed, upon them. The ratchet-teeth provide a se- Serial No. 247,075. (No model.)
cure footing for the supporting-arms D and D, pivoted at their upper ends to the movable frame B and the platform 0, respectively. By the lowering of these arms and their engagement with the ratchet-teeth any desired elevation or inclination of the platform of the foot-rest may be secured.
The platform C is hinged to the inner end of the movable frame B. A lifting-knob, G, preferably egg-shaped, is provided at each end of the bolt that forms the hinge, so as to facilitate the lifting of the movable frame and platform without liability of injury to the hand.
The supporting arms D and D may be changed from the form shown in the drawings as taste or convenience may dictate without affecting the vital features of the invention. Vhen not in use, these arms are folded under the movable frame and platform, respectively.
The projecting arm P, to which the base frame is rigidly attached, is slightly inclined downward, so as to conform to the elevation of the base-frame.
The tracks and the guide running thereon may be changed in form and mode of attachment, although I prefer the form and means shown in the drawings.
\VhatI claim as new and of my invention, and for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination, with a seat-frame, of tracks longitudinally arranged on the under side of said frame, a guide-piece provided with grooved ends fitting said tracks, and a forwardly projecting arm rigidly attached thereto, a horizontal base-frame rigidly connected with said projecting arm, a movable frame fitting into and hinged to said baseframe at its outer end, both frames having side flanges projecting inwardly and provided with ratchetteeth on their upper surface, a platform hinged to the free or inner end of said movable frame, and supporting-arms pivoted at their upper ends to the movable frame and the platform, respectively, and engaging at their lower ends with the ratchet-faced flanges when said arms are lowered, substantially as set forth and described.
2. The combination of a seat-frame, longitudinal tracks K K, secured thereunder, projecting arm P, having guide-piece L grooved upper surface, platform 0, hinged to the inner end of the movable frame and having liftingknobs G, supporting arms D and D, and [5 means for connecting said foot-rest to a seatframe, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SANFORD G. SGARRITT.
at its ends, base-frame A, rigidly attached to said arm, said frame provided with ratchetfaced side flanges projecting inwardly, as shown and described, movable frame B, having like flanges and hinged to the outerend of the base-frame, platform 0, hinged to the inner end of the movable frame, and supportingarms D and D,substantially as set forth.
3. A foot-rest consisting of a base-frame, A,
movable frame 13, hinged to the outer end of Vitnesses: the base-frame, both frames provided Within- JOHN H. MosLEY, ner side flanges having ratchct teet-h on their J. H. HOHMM.
