CHIIIDS WAIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application filed September 16, 1918. Serial No. 254,275.
To all whom itmm concern:
Be it known that I, EDNA F. Mums, a citizen of the United States, residing at the cit and county of Denver and State of Colora 0, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Wa1sts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in waists for children, my object being to provide a device of this character which is of such construction as to prevent the pulling oil of buttons in the back as the child stoops. Heretofore, so far as I am aware, waists have been made which are rigid or nonelastic in the back so that in the case of a child wearing a waist and trousers, the trousers buttoning upon the waist, as soon as the child bends forward there is an undue strain on the back buttons of the waist which results in pulling off these buttons at frequent intervals, thus causing a relatively large amount of trouble due to repair work and general annoyance.
y improvement is intended to overcome this difliculty and to this end I provide a yieldably retained vertical fold or plait extending transversely across the back of the waist, preferably just above the zone or area where the buttons are located. The specific construction is immaterial so long as the ob ject is attained.
As illustrated in the drawing, I provide a fold or plait in the back of the waist and connect elastic strips with the waist both above and below the plait or fold so that normally the plait is closed. When the child stoops or bends forward these elastic strips will yield and the fold or plait will extend as necessities require, thus relieving the buttons from undue strain.
Having briefly outlined my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. In this drawing:
Figure 1 is a rear view or elevation of a childs waist, provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22, Flg. 1, the parts being shown on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a rear view position upon a child.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the child in the stooped or forwardly bent position, the yielding quality of the waist being indicated.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a childs waist provided with buttons 6 for the trousers and other buttons 7 for the undergarment. This waist may be of ordinary or any suitable construction, except that in the back or lower part thereof just above the buttons I form a vertical fold or plait 8 extending transversely across the waist. As shown in the drawing, this fold is loose, except at its extremities where it is stitched through. Between these extremities the fold is free to open. Extending loosely across this fold are vertically disposed strips or bands 9 of elastic material, as suspender webbing. As shown in the drawing, I have employed three of these elastic members, though the number may be varied as circumstances may require. Each of these elastic strips or members is secured to the waist at its upper extremity, as shown at 10, and at its lower extremity, as shown at 19. Between these extremities the elastic member is loose and free to give as the position of the child may re uire. as while bending forward, as illustrate in Fig. 5. When the waist is in use it is evident that as the child bends forward as illustrated in Fig. 5, the waist will extend, due to the fold 8 and prevent undue strain upon the buttons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A childs nether-garment-supporting waist having a relatively narrow folded member set in the back of the waist with the fold showing the waist in extending transversely of the entire back the entire transverse length of the folded of the Waist, the edges of said folded memmember, and a series of fasteners on the garber being secured to the Waist, elastic means ment below the folded member for the at- 10 spanning said folded member and secured to tachment of nether garments.
5 the Waist immediately above and below the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
folded-member, said elastic means extending and being effective throughout substantially EDNA F. MEIER.
