Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed April 14, I919. Serial No. 289,782.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hose-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hose supporters, the object of the invention being to provide an improved supporter of this class that is strictly non-elastic, but so constructed as to give the wearer all the advantages of the elastic supporter, and which will not bind or impede the circulation of the blood, the supporter being extremely simple in construction, economical to manufacture and very efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
The drawing accompanying and fo ming part of this specification is a perspective view illustrating a hose supporter made in accordance with the present invention.
It is well known to all wearers of garters that in the use of elastic garters the garter will slip down when the elastic begins to weaken. Moreover, when the elastic is new and is drawn tight enough to efliciently hold the garment, it contracts to such an extent on the blood vessels and so impedes thecirculation that considerable discomfort frequently results therefrom. Many attempts have been made to overcome this difficulty, but without very much success, as heretofore it has been found impractical to employ a non-elastic garter that would afford the advantages of the elastic garter. The object of the present invention, therefore, is to or ercome the difiiculty above mentioned and to provide a garter of non-elastic materlal which, owing to its peculiar construction, affords all of the advantages of the elastic garter without any of its disadvantages.
Referring to the drawing, 2 designates a band adapted to partly encircle the leg, this band being made of inelastic material and preferably provided with a clasp or adjusting device 3 preferably of flat sheet metal and a pair of loops 4, one of said loops being attached at the extreme end of said band and the other slidable along the band for elastic material, is passed through one of the loops 4 and through the loop of a hook member 6 adapted to engage the other loop 4,
and having its ends stitched together, thereby forming an endless loop adapted to complete the'leg-encircling band, the loops 4 and the loop of the hook 6 being also of sheet metal, and by reason of the vertical slots therein, receiving said material therethrough from the inside to the outside, or vice versa. A depending portion 7' is secured to the loop member 5 and carries at its lower end a suitable clip 8 for attachment to a hose. When in use the member 5 forms a triangular-shaped portion which works through the loops at its ends in such a manner as to give the wearer perfect ease and comfort and at the same time provides a reliable device which when drawn down by excessive pressure also draws the two ends of the wider band portion 2 so as to tighten the band on the leg and prevent the garter from slipping down, whereby it is only necessary to adjust the band around the leg only tight enough to prevent it slipping of its own weight, and any additional tightening required is afforded by the pull of the garment at the lower end of the supporter, which pull, of course, varies according to the position of the leg. It will thus be seen that, owing to the construction of this supporter, it is not necessary for the wearer to at all times submit to an amount of pressure that is necessary to support the garment under any and all conditions and positions of the leg, but whenextra pressure is exerted thereon it is transmitted bythe triangular-shaped member 5 to the member 2 in such a manner as to reliably retain the garment in position without discomfort to the wearer.
While I have described in detail the structure hereinillustrated, it is to be understood that I do not thereby limit my invention to the precise features of construction shown, as am aware that many mechanical changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what cle the leg of the wearer, and a triangular] loop-formed, non-elastic member slidably engaging the ends of said adjustable member and. having means at its lower end for engaging a garment, said first-named member comprising an adjustable 100 of band material and provided with terminal loops of flat sheet material provided with vertical slots therein, and the second-named member comprising a loop of flat band material engaged through said slots and carrying said 10 garment engaging means.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my slgnature in "the presence of two witnesses. t 'JE-SSE HAWKINS. Witnesses:
