STOCKING SUPPORTER. No. 404,862. Patented June 11, 188-9.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. RABITTE, OF ROSSVILLE, NEV YORK.
STOCKlNG-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,862, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed December 24, 1888. Serial No. 294,469. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. RABITTE, residing at Rossville, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Stocking-Supporters or Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvem ents in supporters for stockings, or it may be used upon the arm for the purpose of. holding a shirt-sleeve; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the drawings, in Which Figure 1 shows a garter embodying myimprovements; and Fig. 2 is a section through the line m :r, Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A desi gnates a band, preferably of flexible webbing material, having one of its ends provided with a slide a and looped through an elongated metal ring B. By means of the slide a the band may be adjusted to any required size in the ordinary manner. A finger and fastener strip 0 is secured to the ring B by means of the portion 1) of a clasp or fastener which is designed to engage the portion a of the clasp 011 the opposite end ofthe band A. The strip C is non-elastic, and is preferably of leather or similar close-grained material, so that it will not tear out or break, and a similar piece of stay material cl is secured to the opposite end of the band for the reception of the por-' tion 0 of the clasp. The clasp D,comprising the portions 19 c,is not my invention, and it is obvious that any other suitable clasp may be substituted therefor in my combination.
E designates a spring-actuated clasp of any Well-known construction d epending by means of a flexible attachment from aloop 6, formed at the lower end of the stay-piece (Z. This clasp E is designed to engage the material and support short hose or stockings, or, when the device is used'upon the arm, the clasp may engage the material of a shirt-sleeve, and for the latter use it maybe preferable to make the attachment to the main portion or band A, of elastic material.
The garter herein described is easily placed -in position, and, owing to the non-elastic finportion, a portion of a clasp on said stay-piece,
and a spring-actuated clasp having a flexible connection With the loop of the stay-piece, substantially as specified.
2. A garment-supporter consisting of an elastic band having a ring at one end, a nonelastic flexible finger strip secured to said ring, a clasp portion on said finger-piece, a non-elastic flexible stay-piece secured to the opposite end of the elastic band and having a loop, a-clasp portion on said stay-piece, a flexible connection in said loop, and a clasp at the lower end of the flexible connection, substan tially as specified.
JOHN M. RABITTE.
