INVISIBLE SUSPENDERS;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0a; 26,1920
Application filed. August 13, 1919. Serial 110. 317,189.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE H. AvEo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Wellsand State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inlnvisible Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates. to invisible suspenders, as they are termed, and particularly to improvements on the suspender or garment supporter illustrated in my Patent, No. 1,298,274, granted on March 25, 1919.
The general object of the invention'is to provide a garment supporter or suspender of that type known as invisible, that is in V which the suspenders are completelyconcealedby the shirt, wherein the use of metal clasps or yokes is minimized, and wherein the straps of which the supporter or sus pender is composed have a maximum freedom of movement at the back to accommodate and permit the free movement of the wearers shoulders. I I V A further object is to provide a suspender or garment supporter of this type wherein the two shoulder webs or straps havea back slide or connection with each other, and" wherein the ends of the two webs are connected by straps having sliding engagement with each other to thereby give that'freedom of motion necessaryfor comfort and ease to the wearer and to give freedom of movement at the back tocompensate for the move; mentsof the shoulders of the wearer and adjust themselves to persons who, are longwaisted or short-waisted. V I I A further object is to form the back slide of a supporter of non-elastic webbing to thereby permit a better sliding movement of the webs upon each other, thus giving more freedom of movement to the person and more comfort to the body.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description. 7 r
My invention is illustrated in the panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective viewof the suspenders; V
Fig.2 is a detail view of the back slide. Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved garment supporter comprises two straps 10 and 10 which'are rela-.
tively broad, land formed of elastic material, each of these sections 10 at its lower end be ing passedthrough a yoke 11 and then extending upward to an adjustingbuckle 12. At its upper end, each" of the members 10 is provided with a yoke 13 and through this yoke there is disposed an elongated loop 14 0f 'flat, non-elastic webbing, this loop being preferably, however, of a single piece of material stitched, at 15. It will be seen that the yoke l l'has freedom of movement in the yoke 13. One thickness or strand of one loop passes between the two thicknesses of the other loop, as shown in Fig. 2, so that while these two loops 14 are interconnected with each other, yet they may shift readily with relation to each other, The webbing section 10 carries at one end the yoke 11, as previously stated, and through the eye of this yoke is disposed the elongated looped parts formed of a non-elastic, textile band 17. Said bandis in the fprm'of an elongated loop and is threaded through the yoke 11,: through the yoke 16, and through a yoke 18 engaging with a button clip 19 of conventional form, It will be seen from Fig. l that the inner and outer strandsof the loop 17' havefree sliding motion in the yoke 18, which is :pro-
"vided with transverse rollers to that end so that this yokeycan move freely and so that if theyoke 18 is given a sidewise pull, one
of the divergent. branches of the loop 17 will other correspondingly shorten and the lengthen. The loop 17 is connectedtoa section of elastic webbing'20 which, in turn, is connected to the corresponding loop 14. Of
course, the webbing:10- is also connected. to
a;loop'17 carryingfthe yoke 18 in the same manner as before described, and this loop .is 1 also connected to a webbing section 20 engaged inflle l 14; p I I ;-This devi is intended t be disposed with the portions 10 andlm extending over the shoulders ofthe wearer fllldWVltlI the back slide, composed of the two loops 14,- on the back of the wearer. It will be obvious that this garment supporter permits both back slip or slide and side slip or slide which effectively distributes the weight of the trousers or other garment on the two bands 17. This garment supporter prevents the body garment from bulging out either. atthe front or back and causes the garment to hang properly on the wearer. The device may be applied with facility and is adapted to be disposed underneath the shirt so thatthe supporter will be invisible. I convenience of a supporter of this kind is 1 10 The general loops 17.
words in the use of non-elastic material to form the loops 14. I have found in practice that the elastic material tends to stick or impede free movement, whilenon-elastic material, such as that used to form the webs or loops 1-Zt,does not tend to stick but the plies of the loopsmove freely over each other with the movement of the shoulders, thus giving greater freedom of movement and more comfort to the wearer.
Furthermore, it is pointed out that these loops 14 are free to move within the yokes 13 so as to permit of much greater freedom of movement than would be possible if these yokes 13 were engaged with the loops by stitching. One of the most important things in this connection is the provision ofa back slide constructed in accordance with my invention, with the side slides formed of the This is absolutely necessary to give full freedom of motion and comfort and ease to the wearer, to cause the suspenders to conform to every movement of the shoulders,
,and to adjust themselves to different waists of persons, whether the person be long or short-waisted or medium-waisted. This 15 absolutely necessary in invisible supporters, because where there are only two pomts ofsuspension, it is necessary to obtain freedom of movement so as to properly adjust the weight of the trousers to keep them from bulging out and'to take off strain from the shoulders. Invisible supporters which do not have perfect freedom of movement at the back where the webs cross each other, are uncomfortable and prevent proper hang of the trousers on thebody.
Iclaim:
1. A garment supporter composedof two bands of elastic webbing, each band being composed of two sections of elastic webbing spaced from each other, an elongatedloop of non-elastic webbing separate from but connected to and connecting said sections, the loop of one band crossing and passing through the loop of the other band, and the two loops having free, sliding engagement with each other, and loops of non-elastic material each having engagement with the forward'end of oneof said bands and the rear end of the other band, and garment engag- .ingclevices slidingly mounted on said last passing through the loop of the other band andthe two loops having free sliding engagement with each other, and loops of material each having engagement with the forward endof one of said bands and the rear end of the other band, and garment engaging devices slidingly mounted on said last named loops. a
- 3. A garment supporter comprising two bands adapted to be disposed over the shoulders of the wearer, each of said bands being composed oftwo sections, one of said sec tions adapted to extend over the shoulders of the wearer and down on the front of the body, the other section extending downward over the back of the body, the two sections being joined by a loop of non-elastic material, one strandof the loop of one band being passed between the strands of the loop on the other band, whereby said loops have free, sliding engagement with each other, each loop being connected to the shoulder section of the corresponding band by a yoke and having an eye through which the loop slidingly passes, the forward end of each shoulder band, having a yoke formed with an eye and the lower end of each back sec tion being formed with an eye, a loop of nonelastic material passed through the eye on the yoke of each shoulder section and through the eye on the yokeof the opposite back section, and a garment engaging device slidingly engaged with said last named loops.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
MAURICE 1-1. AVED.
