Description

E. M. CRUMRINE.
HOSE SUPPORTER. APPLICATION men MAY 25. 1914.
Patented May 22,1917.
, corset down in its proper UNIT , ELLEN M. CRUMRINE, or LIMA, OHIO.
HOSE-SUPPORTER- To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ELLEN M; CRUMRINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, inthe county of Allen, State of Ohio,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
ings securely in position wlthout straining or tearing the fabric of such stockings, and without binding upon the limbs of the wearer to an uncomfortable extent, but will also hold thev lower portion or skirt-of the position, thereby preventing the raising or bulging of such portion of the corset.
Still a further object of the provision of a supporter which will en body the features of simplicity, reliability and convenience, which may be readily applied for use and suitably adjusted as may be found desirable, and which may be manu factured and marketed at a relatively low my invention is cost With the above recitedobjects and others of a similar nature in View, my invention consists in theconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing: 7
Figure l-is a view showing my invention a plied to a corset and illustrating the position it occupies when worn by a person.
Fig. 2is a plan view showing one of the encircling bands or garters detached and unclasped.
Fig.3 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken through the garterband and the connections between the band and one of the suspending-tapes or straps.
Fig. 4 is a detail'view in perspective of one of the slides of the garter band.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in top plan of the clasp employed for connecting the ends of the garter band.
Referring now to the accompanying draw- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented M y 22, 1917.
Application filed Mayi25 ,.1914. Serial No. 840,818.
ings in detail, the letter A indicates the corset having attached to the bottom of the skirt 1 thereof a suitable number of tapes or straps 2. These straps maybe fastened'to the corset in any suitable manner, such as by stitching, and furthermore each strap is made adjustable as to length by means of an adjusting buckle 3. The lower end of each tape is passed through the elongated eye 4: of an attaching loop 5, these designed to detachably engage with the slides of the garter bands as hereinafter described. 7
Each garter hand is indicated as an entirety by the letter B, and is in the nature of a strap or band of elastic material which is adapted to encircle the limb of the wearer above the knee, to hold the stocking in place. While the band is designed to fit snugly over .the stocking it is not intended to bind in such manner as to interfere with the circulation of the blood, or cause discomfort to the'wearer, garter band being attained by the frictional engagement of the band with the stocking under the influence of the moderate upward pull exerted by the suspending straps 2. The band may be fastened around the limb in any suitable manner, such as by a clasp comprising the eye plate 6 connected with one end of the band and the hook plate 7 at the other end of the band, the tongue 8 of the latter plate being adapted to engage with the eye plate 6. By employing a clasp made of such plate like sections, the clasp has a relatively wide flat bearing surface which will lie snugly against the stocking and will not cause discomfort to the wearer. Furthermore the garter band is provided with an adjusting buckle 9 through which the band is reeved, as shown in Fig. 5, so,
that such garter band may be lengthened or shortened, as desired.
Carried by each garter band B are slides 10, each slide being preferably constructed of metal and made in the form of anelongated or rectangular frame, having a longitudinally disposed central bar 11 which divides the slide so as to form two slots 12-12 through which the elastic band B passes. The top of each slidehas formed integral therewith a curved resilient or spring tongue 13, this tongue being curved downward and inward, and is formed with a widened terminal 14, which is bent slightly outward from the body of the tongue.
the holding effect of the attaching loops being These tongues 13 are designed to be passed through the loops 5, in order to attach the garter bands to the straps 3, each loop being turned to a horizontal position when slip ping it over the widened end or terminal 14 of the tongue 13. then the tongue has thus been passed through the loop and the latter is turned to a vertical position, such as it occupies when in use, the widened end of the tongue will prevent the accidental disengagement of the loop.
As will be readily understood, the slides are arranged to be shifted along the. garter band, to occupy such position thereon as will enable the wearer to attach the suspending tapes thereto, in such manner as will be conducive to the greatest comfort and convenience.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. The garter bands are placed so as to encircle the limbs above the knees as shown in Fig. l, and the ends fastened by means of the clasps, the bands being adjusted to fit snugly and comfortably and without binding. The wearer having donned the corset, the tapes or straps 3 are properly adjusted as to length, and the slides 10 are shifted on the garter bands to aline with the attaching loops of the tapes, which loops are then fastened to the slides by means of the tongues 13 of the latter, as heretofore mentioned.v It will be noted that the slides when connected with the tapes may be shifted on the garter band to suit the convenience of the wearer.
It will be noted that I have provided an exceedingly simple, yet convenient and comfortable supporter by means of which the stockings will not only be held up in position, without pulling or tearing the fabric thereof, or without the supporter binding upon the limbs, but the skirt of the corset will also be held down in position, and prevented from bulging, or raising, which is liable to occur, especially in case of the long skirted corsets now generally worn.
lVhile I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not limitmyself to all the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without: departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a slide adapted-to be carried by a band and having a depending resilient tongue integral with the upper portion thereof, said tongue being adapted to receive a connecting member and curving inwardly toward the body of the slide so as to engage the outer surface of the band and thus prevent withdrawal of the connecting member from the tongue, the terminal of said tongue being outwardly directed to permit ready insertion of the connecting member in the tongue, said terminal being of relatively greater width than the opening through the connecting member with which it engages to hold the slide and member against acci dental displacement.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
