Description

J. BELLIS.
HOSE SUPPORTER.
AAAAAAAAA 01': IILED JAN.13,1913.

JOSEPH BELLIS, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
HOSE-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
Application filed January 13, 1913. Serial No. 741,787.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St, Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ItloseSupporters, of which the following is a specificatlon.
In the hose supporters at the present time in use, there exists a common disadvantage which materially detracts from their general adoption, and that is the tendency of the clamping or hose engaging members to tear or wear the garment at the points of engagement, due to the strain necessarily put upon it.
The particular object of my invention, therefore, has been to provide a supporter having a peculiar construction of clamping attachment, whereby the strain usually put upon the points of engagement, s llSl'lpb' uted entirely around the hose, eliminating likelihood of tearing the same, or in any way injuring the fabric.
For a full understanding of my invent ion, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying draw ings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a supporter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing one of the hook members in engagement with its coacting ring member in operative position for supporting the hose. Fig. 3 1s a vertical sectional view taken about on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a view in elevation of a modified form of the hose engaging or hook member. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, 1 designates a body supportlng member, in this instance a belt or tape for fastening around the waist of the wearer and having the usual buckle 2 for securing it in posit-ion. To the supporting member 1 is attached, by stitching or otherwise, a sultable body or pad 3, which lies against the abdomen and is of sufficient size to readily accommodate the attachment of a plurality of elastic strap members 4, 4, arranged at the lower corners of said pad, and 5, 5, disposed therebetween.
The novel features of my invention lie 2 and 3.
ing members, which consists of the hook members 6 and the leg encircling or ring members 8 for cooperation with the former in affording proper support to the hose without mutilating or injuring the latter. Each of the hook members 6, one of which is at tached to each of the elastic strap members 4, 4, 5, 5, consists of a piece of stiff metal, such as spring wire, bent at its upper portion to form an oblong loop 7, through which said elastic strap members pass, said loop being substantially closed to prevent displacement of the elastic. It is to be understood, of course, that the ends of the wire are soldered or joined together so as to form a continuous member, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, the lower portion of the same being bent upwardly to form the hook proper 6', and this hook is preferably, though not necessarily, bent rearwardly out of the vertical plane of the main body portion of said hook member, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Each of the cooperating ring members 8, of which there are two, consists of an open band of spring material, preferably covered with fabric. The ring members are suspended from the pad 3 one at the outer side of each of the intermediate elastic supporting members 5, 5, by means of the connecting members 9, which latter may, or may not be of an elastic nature.
Tn the use of the device above described, the same having been suspended from the body of the wearer by means of the belt 2, the ring members 8 are first inserted around the leg over the top portion of the hose 11 so as to leave a surplus of the same which is folded down over, or wrapped around the member 8, substantially as shown in Figs. The hook member (3 is then drawn down under tension, of course, and the hook portion 6 engaged beneath the ring memher 8, the members 6 carried by the elastics l, 4t being disposed at the outer portion of the leg and those connected with the clastics 5, 5 at the inner portion. It will be perfectly obvious that the strain thus placed upon the hose is distributed evenly around the top of the same and not applied to the particular points of engagement of the spaced hook members 6 therewith, the advantage of this, in addition to that set forth hereinbefore being that the stocking is held perfectly smooth all around. I have also provided against likelihood of the hook members 6 becoming accidentally disengaged from their respective ring members by bending the wire at each side between the hook portion 6 and the loop 7 into projections 10 which not only extend inwardly toward each other but slightly out of the vertical plane of the main body of the hook member 6 so as to project over said rings and stocking. Thus, it needs only slight pressure to remove the hook member from its cooperating ring or leg band, this being easily accomplished in an apparent manner. As is customary, the elastics 4, t and 5, 5 are each provided with the usual adjusting clasps 12, by means of which the proper tension may be provided in the use of the hose supporter. It will be understood furthermore, that the device may readily be adapted to mens supporters and therefore, I do not wish to be confined to the exact body suspension moans illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, nor to any particular material from which the same might be made.
In Figs. 4 and 5 there is shown a modification of the hose engaging or hook member embodying the loop portion 7 in which the elastic is adapted to be secured and having at its lower extremity the hook proper 6 The hook member is bent at an, angle intermediate its length, as shown at l0 which bent portions project over the hook member 6 to prevent, as hereiubefore described, in connection with the preferred form, the accidental displacement of the leg encircling member. As an auxiliary safety means, the modified form is shown as provided with a resilient or yielding member, such as a spring 13, secured to the hose engaging member beneath the loop portion 7 in any suitable manner, such as by a sleeve let. This spring cooperates with the bent portions 10 to prevent the leg encircling member from accidentally slipping out of its engagement with the hook portion 6 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a hose supporter, the, combination. with body supporting means, of hose engaging members connected thereto and comprising a ring member around which the hose is adapted to be folded, a hook member connected with the supporting means and adapted to be engaged beneath the ring member, and means on the hook member adapted to project over the ring member to prevent accidental disengagement of the former from the ring member.
2. In a hose supporter, the combination with body supporting means, of a pair of hook members connected therewith in spaced relation to each other, and a relatively rigid leg encircling member suspended from the body supporting means between the hook members aforesaid and adapted to :receive thereover a fold of the hose, said hook members being adapted to cooperate with the leg encircling member to supportthe hose at its opposite sides.
3. In a hose supporter, the combination with body supporting means, of a pair of hook members connected therewith in spaced relation to each other, and a cocperating hose engaging member consisting of anopen ring adapted to be disposed around the hose adjacent its upper portion beneath a fold of said hose, each hook member in its cooperation with the hose engaging member being adapted to press the fold aforesaid around and beneath the ring to clamp, the hose thereto.
4. In a hose supporter, the combination with body supporting means, of a hook member comprising an integral wire con nected with the body supporting means and bent at its lower portion to form a hook portion extending out of the plane of the main portion of the hook member and provided with projections intermediate the loop; and hook portions, and cooperating means associated with the hose comprising a band upon which the hose is adapted to be folded to hold the same in smooth condition, said hook member being engageable beneath the bandfor supporting the same, with the projections aforesaid projecting over the band to prevent accidental displacement of the latter.
5. A hose supporter comprising, in corn bination, body supporting means, elastic. members connected therewith, a spring ring member connected with the body supporting means over which the hose is adapted to be wrapped, and hook members carried by each of the elastic members and adapted to engage beneath the ring member to frictionally clamp the hose theretoat opposite sides, whereby strain may be distributed evenly around the hose.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
J USE-PH BELLIS.
