GEORGED. ABLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARMENT SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
Application filed January 6, 1919. Serial No. 269,769.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. ABLE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Garment Supporter, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to garment supporters, and more particularly to supporters adapted to retain a hose and other garments.
In that class of hose supporters in which the hose is retained by a band encircling the leg and attached by a suitable fastener to the hose, there is considerable pressure on the leg which not only impedes its free movement, but also tends to restrain the circulation of blood.
Difficulty is further experienced in retaining a shirt in position, especially where suspenders are dispensed with and the trousers are retained in position by a belt.
One of the objects of this invention, therefore, is to provide a garment supporter which is adapted for attachment at its upper end to a garment so as to extend along the leg and is adapted for attachment at its lower end to a hose to retain it in position.
Another object is to provide a garment supporter which is adapted for attachment to a shirt and the hose so as to not only retain the hose in position, but also retain the shirt.
Another object is to provide a garment supporter which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, capable of adjustment and which does not restrict the movements of the leg.
Further objects will appear from the detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of a garment supporter embodying this invent-ion;
Figure 2 is a detail showing another embodiment of this invention;
Figure 3 is a detail showing still another embodiment of this invention;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 44, Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the garment or hose engaging fastener.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 and 5, the support comprises a hanger consisting-of sections 1 and 2, joined by a ring 3. The sections 1 and 2 are constructed of elastic tape webbing doubled over the ring 3 and each provided with a buckle or clasp 4 whereby the effective length of each section may be varied. Attached to the free end of each hanger section by tabs 5 and 6, are elements 7 and 8 of a well known form of fastener, the element 7 having a button 9 of rubber engaged by an eye or slot 10 in the element 8. Attached to the ring 3 is a tab 11 carrying a suitable fastener 12 in the form of a safety pin. It will, therefore, be seen that the device comprises a hanger consisting of sections flexibly connected or jointed at their junctions, having at their free ends, fasteners, and at their junction, a third fastener.
In the application of the device embodying this invention, the upper fastener is secured to the shirt 13; the ends of the shirt being preferably overlapped and secured together by the fastener, although this fastener may be secured to either one of the shirt ends. The lower fastener is then secured to the upper end of the. hose. This causes the hanger to extend along the leg. on the outside thereof. The tension is adjusted by adjustment of the buckles or clasps 1 so as to secure a light yielding tension. The adjustment of the buckles or clasps 4, is preferably so made as to cause the ring 3 to come about opposite the knee joint and the fastener 12 is then passed through the undergarment 14 so as to secure it in place.
The device will ideally perform the functions for which it is designed. Not only will the supporter retain the hose, but it will also retain the shirt in position so that it cannot creep up above the trousers. The attachment of the hanger to the undergarment with the junctions of the hanger sections opposite the knee, not only prevents this hanger from whipping sidewise during the movementof the leg in walking, but also serves to further retain lightly but firmly. both the shirt and the hose in position. The flexible connections between the hanger sections and the fastener attached to the undergarment permit free edgewise flexing of the tape hanger sections relatively at their junction, with and opposite the knee, while retaining the sections wholly in the same plane in all positions of the wearer; but the free movement of the leg is not impeded at all. The connection to the undergarment furthermore performs the additional function, especially tions of the fastener 12.
where smnmer underwear is .used, of preventing the creeping upward of this undergarment.
In the embodiment of this invention shown in Figure 2. which shows a reverse view of the hanger sections 1 and 2 and the ring 3. the ring 3 is provided with a pin pivoted at 16 and engaging a hook 17. The pin is passed through the undergarment and will then perform the func- This construction is very simple. atthe same time, it secures all of the results in an ideal manner.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4. the tab 11 has attached thereto a different form of fastener. this fastener being shown more particularly in Figure 4 and is of a well known construction comprising a body 18 having a yielding jaw 19 closed by a lever 20 so as to engage a fold in the under-garment 14. Its use will be entirely obvious.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction within the scop of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of this invention; it is. therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific details shown and described.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed is:
1. A garment supporter. comprising, a pair of extended jointed tape hanger sectionsmgarment and hose fasteners at the free ends of said sections. said sections extending along the side of theleg with the junction opposite the knee, whereby the garment fastener is adapted to connect with a garment above the knee and the hose fastener is adapted to connect with the hose below the knee, and means for attaching said sections at their junction to a garment at the knee, adapted to wise flexing of said sections relatively at their junction, with and opposite the knee, while retaining said sections wholly in the same plane.
2. A garment supporter, comprising, a pair of extended tape hanger sections adapted to extend along the side of the leg, a garment fastener on the free ends of the upper section adapted to connect with a garment above the knee, a hose fastener on the free end of the other section adapted to connect with a hose below the knee. means pivotally connecting said sections and adapted for attachment to a garment ermit free edge-' at the knee, constructed and arranged to' permit free edgewise flexing of said hanger sections relatively at their junction, with and opposite the knee, while retaining said sections wholly in the Same plane.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature this 3rd day of Dec., 1918.
GEORGE D. ABLE.
