WWWAJOW 2 Unrrnn STATES WILLIAM F. HASTINGS, or MARYVILLE, rnnnnssnn.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRlVY-SEATS.
Specification describing Letters Patent No. 129,223, dated July 16, 1872.
Srncrrrolrron.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. P. HASTINGS, of
Maryville, in the county of Blount and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Privy- Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
' The nature of my invention consists in the construction of aprivyseat of pottery, with cushion for the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, of my privyseat.
Arepresents the stand or seat, made of pottery, in conical shape, and of any suitableheight and size. Near the base of the stand A is an exterior circumferential flange, B, which prevents the seat from falling down through the floor of the privy, the extreme lower end of the stand passing down through the floor. This peculiar construction insures the carrying oil of all drippings below the floor of the privy. The flange B is made without a corresponding groove on the interior surface of the stand, as is usual in articles made of pottery, which makes the end much stronger than would otherwise be the case. Y The upper side is flat, to fasten with hooks or buttons, if desired.
Around the upper end of the stand is a pro-' jecting flange, O, and the top side or edge of the stand is made concave, as shown at D. Under the flange O are holes a through the stand, and in the edge of said flange are corresponding notches b, which holes and notches are for the purpose of tying the cushion on with cords, if desired. E represents the main cushion, made in annular form to fit in the concavity I), and to the inneredge of the same is attached a flat pad, G, projecting over the edge of theseat, and provided at its outer edge with an elastic band, H, for holding the entire cushion to its place. This band-fastenin g allows of the removal of the cushion at pleasure, if snow or rain should drift or beat into the privy, rendering it necessary to dry the cushion.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The holes a and notches 1) formed under and in the upper flange O of the stand A, substantially for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the annular cushion E, pad G, and elastic band H, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. P. HASTINGS.
Witnesses:
THOMAS LILLARD, DAVID BOWLES.
