JOHN HITGHOOOK, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEWER-INLET TRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,447, dated April 1, 1873; application filed March 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HITGHCOOK, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Trap; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. l
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sewer-trap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of my invention.
A represents the grate, which is placed over the sink B. One-half of this sink is merely a concave cup, as shown, while the other half forms a downward-projecting spout, (l, which may be either curved, as sho Wn, or square, or any other suitable shape, arid opens toward thefront or in the direction in which the water of the sewer runs. At the upper end of the mouth of the spout G on each side is formed a hook, a, which two hooks form bearings for lugs 12 formed one on each side at the upper end of the valve D. The mouth of the spout O is made slanting, so that the lower part will project further than the upper part 5 and hence the valve D will keep the mouth closed of its own weight, and thus keep or prevent the gases from the sewer from passing up through V the trap. The valve will readily open to the pressure of the water or other substance coming down through the grate A.
The grate A need not necessarily be placed directly on the sink B, as the sink may be dropped down to any desired point in the well if it should become necessary.-
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sink B, spout G, and valve D, constructed and arranged together in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of January, 1873.
JOHN HITGHOOOK. Witnesses:
