Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEO F. H. WILLIAMS, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED STENCH-TRAP.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,478, dated July 17, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, FRANCIS H. WILLIAMS, of Syracuse, in the county ot' Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stench-Trap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specication, in whieh- Figure I represents a vertical central section of this invention. Fig. 2is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. l
This invention consists in the arrangement of' a Siphon-tube with a oating valve, in combination with the sink or waste-pipes leading from the sink or sinks in a building, and with a suitable pipe leading to the sewer, in such a manner that by the liquid remaining in the lowest part of the siphon, and bythe valve, the communication from the sewer back to the sink is irinlyelosed, and the escape of stench vfrom the sewer in the house or building is prevented, and at the same time the communication from the sink or waste-pipes to the sewer is uninterrupted.
A represents the sink in a house or building, and from this. sink extends a siphon, B, which terminates in a chamber, O, from which leads a pipe, D, to the sewer. In the chamber O is a ball-valve, E, made of wood or other material lighter than water, and seated on a shoulder, a., at the junction of the siphon B with the chamber O. If water or other liquid is poured down from the sink through the siphon B the valve E floats ott and the water escapes freely through the pipe D into the sewer. As soon as the supply of water stops the ballvalve returns to its seat, and by its l action, combined with the action ofthe water remaining in the bight of the siphon, the escape of stench from the sewer to the sink or interior of the house is effectually prevented.
If desired, one or more wastepipes, F, from different parts of a house may be connected with the siphon B, and several pipes may be made to extend from the chamber C to the sewer, and a stench-trapis thus obtained which is very simple in its construction, easily kept in working order, and not liable to get out of repair. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The siphou B, provided with a floating valve,E, in combination with the sink or sinks in a house or building and with the pipe or pipes leading to the sewer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
F. H. WILLIAMS.
