Description
W. A.V SPOUNER. Pump-Boxes. Naw-5,265', Paten`ted Sept. 22,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM A. SPOONER, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,265, dated September 22, 1874; application led August 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, vWILLIAM A. SPOONER, of Springfield, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Pump-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a plan or top View of a pumpboX made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through line L, and Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the same.
My invention relates to an upper box of the ordinary lifting-pump; and it consists of a cup-leather secured firmly between two plates by means of ordinary screws, which secure the two plates together, each plate provided with an upturned flange, to give support to the cupped part of the leather, and the upper plate has the bail cast thereto, and also is provided with a weighted clapper or valve to close the water-passage.
In the drawings, A is the lower plate, of circular form, provided with the hole H, and perforated for the insertion of four screws, a, and also provided with the annular flange b at the rim on the upper side, which is slightly rounded on the inside. C is the upper plate, with a hole in the center, and is also provided with an annular ange, B, at the rim, projecting upward, and which is slightly rounded on the outer and lower side, and to this plate is cast the bail G, having a threaded hole, I, in the top, in which to secure the pump-rod. The upper and lower plates are perforated with holes, those in the upper plate being threaded for the insertion of screws a, and to the upper plate is secured, upon one side of the central opening, a weighted leather valve or clapper,
E'. An ordinary cup-leather, D, provided with a central hole, similar in form, size, and location to that in each plate, is placed between the two plates A and C, and holes being made through the leather, the screws a are inserted and turned in tightly, and the cup-leather D is thereby held firmly in place, the upturned part of the cup-leather being well supported, and prevented from being forced down at the rim by the supporting-anges B and b.
If the cup-leather should become worn and a new one required, it is only necessary to turn out the screws a with a common driver, insert the new leather in place of the old, and turn in the screws.
I am aware that cup-leathers have heretofore been used, and secured in place between two parts ofthe box, and I do not claim that feature irrespective of my construction and arrangement of the same, as IA am not aware that two plates provided with supportinglianges to support the cup of the leather, and secured together by ordinary screws, have heretofore been known or used.
The central hole H of the box is quite large enough to admit the trip of the lower box to raise the clapper E', when it is desired to let the water out of the pump.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- An improved pump-box, consisting of the plate A, provided with the iiange b, the plate C, provided with the supporting-liange B, the bail G, and the clapper or valve E', and the screws a, and the cup-leather D, all combined and arranged substantially as herein set forth.
WILLIAM A. SPOONER.
