Description
H. A.]READ. Horseshoe.
ANo. 196,479.
Patented Oct. 23,1877
ATTORNEYS N-rTERs. PRoTu-Lxrnoamwxsn. wAsHmc'ToN. n c4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEMI( A. READ, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,479, dated October 23, 1877 application tiled June 26, 1877.
To all 'whom 'it may concma Be it known that I, HENRY A. READ, of Fort W'ayne, in the county of Allen, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a horseshoe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side view of a horses hoof with my shoe attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the shoe; and Fig. 3 is a section through the line x w, Fig. 2.
A represents the horseshoe, having its upper surface beveled downward from the inner to the outer wall of the shoe, as shown at b in Fig. 3. The under surface of the shoe is beveled off, as at a, on the outer edge all the way around, which throws the pressure of the ground-surface on the entire inner edge w of the shoe, and takes the pressure, to a great extent, 0E of the outward edge of the shoe on the ground-surface; and the interior of the shoe is concave, as seen at d. By this means the jar or concussion is taken oif of the wall of the hoof, thereby benefiting the animal when suffering from contraction of the feet.
Calks of any desired construction may be used on this shoe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A horseshoe having its upper surface beveled downward from the inner to the outer wall, as seen at b, Fig. 3, and its under surface beveled all around, to throw the pressure upon the entire inner edge a" of the shoe, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of June, 1877.
' HENRY A. READ. Vitnesses:
W. J. KEER, JOHN SEATON.
