Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 191?.
Application filed March 10, 1916. Serial No. 83,379.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK A. KINGHAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at tagle Grove, in the county of Wright and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of a combined anti-slipping attachment and wear plate for horseshoes, adapted to be associated with the calk of the shoe to project below the edge thereof as the call: gradually wears away, whereby the projecting portion of the plate wears to define a sharp edge to prevent slipping of the animal, especially during inclement weather, the plate being preferably constructed of steel with a view of prolonging the life of the shoe as a whole.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the claim.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a view showing the device associated with the shoe.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the calks and wear plates, showing the latter associated with the calk.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device.
Before entering into a detail description of what is herein shown, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts, as the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, and that various changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 10 indicates a horseshoe provided with calks 11, which latter may form an integral part of the shoe or be detachably associated therewith.
The device forming the subject matter of my invention is indicated at 12, and consists of a plate designed to conform to the particular formation of calk with which it is adapted to be used. The plate is preferably constructed from steel, or other suitable material which is harder than the material from which the calk 11 is constructed, so that the life of the shoe is greatly prolonged, as the steel plate Will not wear as quickly as the ordinary calk. The plate is adapted to be arranged against one side of the calk in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. The plate however is preferably welded to thercalk, but with a view of more securely retaining the plate associated with the calk, a tang 13 is stamped from the plate and bent at right angles therefrom to enter the calk v hen the plate is being welded to the latter. Subsequent to the proper association of the parts, the plate practically forms an integral part of the calk, and as the latter gradually wears, the steel plate is caused to project a slight distance beyond the lower edge of the calk to present a wearing surface for the shoe. The plate wears to define a relatively sharp edge which obtains an effective purchase upon the ground or surface, and therefore is especially advantageous in preventing the animal from slipping under any and all conditions.
What is claimed is 2- The combination with an animal shoe having heel calks formed with a projecting shoulder, of a wearing plate having a substantially rectangular outline to cover the rear face of the calk to which the plate is welded, said plate having its upper edge engaging beneath said shoulder of the call: flush with the outer surface of the shoulder, the opposite end of said plate projecting an appreciable distance beneath said calk and beveled to provide a sharp edge, and a substantially V-shaped tang out from the plate approximately central thereof, and hep: at a right angle to be embedded in said ca In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
