IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification formir; part of Letters Patent No. 157,401, dated December 1, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, D. H. and VV. H. HUMPHREY, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Packing Rack; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Our invention is intended as an improve ment upon the journal-packing rackfor which Letters Patent No.142,695 were granted to Wm. H. Humphrey, September 9, 1873; and the nature of our invention consists in the peculiar manner of attaching the spring to the bottom of the rack, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 tral vertical section.
A represents the bottom of the rack, provided with curved or angular side pieces B B, all made in one piece or in sections, as may be deemed most convenient. In the bottom A of the rack is an aperture, to, of any suitable size, and in the side pieces B B are slots or openings 1) .b, as shown. 6 e represent hooks cast at each end of the rack Aand curved inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. g g are projections or spurs cast upon the bottom of it to support the rack equallyaround its entire under surface.
In the patent above referred to the rack was placed on the bottom of a car-axle journalbox and inside of the rack was placed a perforated plate, supported upon one or more springs to hold the waste up to the journal. In this case we dispense with said plate entirely, and support the rack itself upon one or more springs, (3, of any suitable construction. The waste is then supported upon the rack itself, and is fed from the bottom of the oil-box through the aperture a in the bottom A, as well as through the slots 1) in the side pieces.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rack A B, provided with hooks e c and projections g g, in combination with the spring 0, all combined to operate as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses. D. H. HUMPHREY.
WM. H. HUMPHREY. Witnesses:
M. H. FANOI-IER, M. L. FANCHER.
