PATENT OEEICE.
ANDREIV A. SMITH, OF PAONIA, COLORADO.
BRAKE-SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,747, dated July 4, 1905.
l Application liled April 22, 1904. Serial No. 204,357.
To all 11179/0111, it may concern;
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. SMITH, a resident of Paonia, in the county of Delta and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved brakeshoe, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of shell adapted to receive and support blocks of wood to bear against a wheel-rim; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4L is a bottom plan view.
My improved brake-shoe consists of a box 1 anda filler 2. rIhe box is composed of sheet metal bent to form a flat back 3 and parallel sides 4, having their forward edges slightly curved, as shown, and a sheet-metal bottom 5 has bent ends 6 securely riveted to sides L and has a portion 7 bent back from its forward edge, forming a recess to allow for wear of the filler 2 without injuring the box. The filler consists, preferably, of a series of blocks cut the proper size and having the side grain of the wood presented to the wheel as a wearing-face. To secure the iiller in the box, the
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section.`
By constructing my improved box 1 with fiat back 3 the filler-blocks 2 can be readily placed in position from the top without dis connecting the box from the brake-beam and is a distinct improvement in the art.
A great many changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set l forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-d 1. A brake-shoe comprising a sheet-metal box having a iiat back and Hat sides, a bottom for said box having upturned iianges riveted to the sides of the box, said bottom having a recess in its edge, a series of wooden blocks in said box and resting on the bottom thereof, a bar passing through openings in the sides of the box over the top block of the series, and means at each end of said bar for preventing accidental displacement thereof.
2. A brake-shoe comprising a sheet-metal box having a flat back and Hat sides, a bottom for said box having upturned iianges riveted to the sides of the box, said bottom having a recess in its edge, a series of wooden blocks in said box and resting on the bottom thereof, a bar passing through the sides of the box near the top thereof, a sheet-metal bracket secured to the back of the box to receive a brake-beam and a pin projecting through the back of the box and one member of said bracket and adapted to enter the brake-beam.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREIV A. SMITH. iNitnesses:
WM. L. MACK, LON LENG.
