Description

rrnn STATES OFFICE.
IMPRQVEMENT in vAuLT-covERs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,519, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vault-Uovers, Floor-Lights, Sto.; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of a vault-cover containing my improvements, and Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sections of the same on lines :c and z z of Fig. l.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each ofthe figures.
The design of my invention is to prevent the discomfort and annoyance occasioned by the dripping of condensed moisture from the lower surface of a vault-cover, floor-light, 85C.; and it consists in the employment of a coating of felt or other fibrous or porous material upon the lower side of the metal portion of the same, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a plate of metal, provided with a series of openings, B, which are preferably made circular, and slightly tapering from their upper to theirlower sides. IVithin each openingB is secured a glass disk or lens, C, which corresponds in size and shape thereto, and is made, respectively, convex and concave upon its upper and lower sides. Secured to or upon the lower surface of the metal plate A isa covering of felt or other fibrous or porous material, D, which is removed direct-ly beneath the lenses C, but has its edge iiush with or projecting slightly beyond the edge of each lens. As thus arranged, the moisture which condenses upon the lower side ot' each lens will pass downward and outward to the edge ofthe same, where it will be absorbed by the felt, and, in-, stead of dripping downward upon the iioor, will be dissipated into the air. Vith relation to the metal portion of the cover, the felt not only performs the same office as in case ofthe glass lens, but also, by protecting the surface ot' said plate from the full action of the air, prevents, in a great degree, the condensation that would otherwise take place thereon.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- In a vault-cover, loorlight, Sto, composed wholly or in part of metal, a coating of felt or other iibrous or porous material, secured to or upon the lower side of the metal, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1873.
THADDEUS HYATT. Witnesses:
GEO. S. PRINDLE, EDM. F. BROWN.
