Description

T. HYATT. Illuminating Vault-Covers. T No. 145,187. l Patented Dec. 2,1873.
W TNEEEEE- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc THAnnEUs HYATT, or NEW Yon-K, N. Y., Assienon To ELIZABETH A. L.
HYATT, or sAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING VAULT-COVERS.
Specification forming part oi'Leiters Patent No. 145,187, dated Dccembcr :2, 1873; application tiled October 22, 1873.
CASE 5.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUs IIYATT, of New York, in the county ot' New York and .in the State of New York, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Illuminating Gratings; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the. accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the'upper side of an illuminating pavement-plate containing my improved lens. Fig. 2 is a like view ot' the lower side ot' said plate. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same through the center of one ofthe lenses; and 4 is a like view, in which is shown a modification in the shape of the lower portion of said lens.
Letters of like naine and kind refer to like parts in each of the tigures.
My invention relates to detachable ilulninatin g-lenses, and is intended to render more easy and speedy their attaclnnent to or removal from a pavement-plate; to which end it consists in an illuminating-lens having tapering sides, provided with a screw-thread, and secured in position by means of a nut applied to or upon .its lower threaded end, substantiallyY as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a glass lens having downward and inward tapering sides, and'provided upon the same, near its lower end, with a screw-thread, a. As thus constructed, the lens is placed within a corresponding'illuminatixig-opening, I), of a pavement-plate, l5, and a nut, (l, passed over its lower threaded end, and screwed upward` moditications as, for instance, the threaded portion a of the lens maybe reduced in the manner shown in Fig. 3, anda spider-shaped nut, Cf, placed thereon, with its arms spanning the light opening and bearing against the lower side of the plate B, while, itA the form of lens shown in Fig. 4, is employed, the nut maybe either entirely below the surface ot' said plate B, or it may be contained within a recess, L', formed in the lower side of the same.
The lenses thus attached are 'securely held in place, and are easily and quickly placed within or removed from the light-openings.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits ot' my invention, what I claim as new 1s- An illuminating-lens having tapering sides, provided with a screw-thread, and secured in position by means ot' a nut applied to or upon its lower threaded end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1873.
