Description

l. H. BSGHEN.
Sewer-Basins for Str eet-Curners. N0l 142,671, vPatented September 9,1873.
I TTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BOSOHEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWER-BASINS FOR STREET-CORNERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,671, dated September 9, 1873; application led July 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BOsOHEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented. a new and Improved Oorner-Oulvert for Sewers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a culvert which forms the section `of a portion of a cylinder, its two straight sides being at right angles to each other, and to the curb-stones which abut against them, while the trap face projects from the curved front of the culvert beyond the corner in such a manner that the operation of flagging the sidewalks is facilitated, and the water enters the culvert without forming a pool in its front, the cover and sides of said culvert being provided with V-shaped grooves to receive and support the V-shaped edges of the curb-stone, and retain the same in position. The manhole of the culvert is provided with a downwardly-projecting ange, which serves to retain the same in position.
In the drawing, letter A designates my culvert, which is made in the form of a quartersection of a cylinder, so that when the same is put down at the corner of two streets, the sides of said culvert are at right angles to the curb-stones which abut against them, and, consequently, the Hag-stones of the sidewalks can be placed directly against said sides, and. no small triangular pieces are required to ll up the space between the edges of the dagstones and the sides of the culvert. The mouth c of my culvert and the trap-face b project beyond the corner, so that the water will freely run into the culvert, and the danger of iiooding the streets is avoided. The cover B of my culvert is provided in its straight sides with vV-shaped grooves c, which correspond in position to V-shaped grooves d in the sides of the culvert 5 and the ends of the curb-stones e which abut against the culvert are made V-shaped, so that they fit the grooves in the culvert and. in the cover, and by these means said curb-stones form keys which serve to retain the cover in the proper position. At the same time the curb-stones rest upon the bottoms of the grooves d in the culvert, and they are effectually prevented from getting displaced. The manhole cover e of my culvert is provided with a flange, which projects down into the manhole, and thereby the cover is securely retained in position.
From this description it will be readily understood that, by means of my culvert, the symmetry of the street-corner can be easily preserved, the curb-stones being prevented from sinking in or from getting out of plumb, and the aggin g ofthe sidewalksis materially facilitated.
If desired, the sides of the culvert A may be made to project beyond the cover, (see Fig. 2,) so that the same will form supports for the adjoining lags, and that said iiags will be prevented from settling down.
I do not broadly claim a corner-culvert having recesses to receive the ends of the curbstone, for such is old, and as now constructed necessitate the preparation and employment of triangular pieces, whereas, in my invention, the Hag-stones come square up against the box; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe culvert A, constructed as described as described with the V-shaped grooves d and a projecting mouth and trap, a b, in combination with the quadrant-shaped cover B having V-shaped grooves c, all constructed and arranged as herein shown for the purpose specified.
JOHN H. BOSOHEN.
